Update Now: New Mac Vulnerability Allows Apps to Spy On You

Microsoft is warning Mac users to update to the latest version of MacOS Monterey after it found a vulnerability in Apple’s Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC) feature.

Exploiting this vulnerability could allow malicious actors to spoof the TCC and plant malware or hijack another app on the computer.

Introduced in 2012 with MacOS Mountain Lion, TCC is designed to help control an app’s access to things such as the camera, microphone, and data. When an app requests access to protected data, the request is compared to existing stored records in a special database. If the records exist, then the app is denied or approved access based on a flag that denotes the level of access.

Otherwise, a prompt is shown to the user to explicitly grant or deny access. Once the user responds, that request is stored in the database and future requests will follow the user’s previous input.

According to Microsoft, the “powerdir” vulnerability, also known as CVE-2021-30970, was actually exploited two times by their security researchers. The first “proof of concept” exploit basically planted a fake TCC database file and changed the user’s home directory.

By doing this, Microsoft was able to change the settings on any application or enable access to the microphone or camera. Microsoft was even cheekily able to give Teams mic and camera access. Microsoft reported these initial findings to Apple in July 2021, though the exploit apparently still worked, despite Apple fixing a similar exploit demonstrated at Black Hat 2021.

The second proof of concept exploit came about because a change in MacOS Monterey’s dsimport tool broke the first exploit. This new exploit allows an attacker to use code injection to change binary called /usr/libexec/configd. This binary is responsible for making system level configuration changes, including access to the TCC database. This allowed Microsoft to silently change the home directory and execute the same kind of attack as the first exploit.

Fortunately, Microsoft again notified Apple of the vulnerability, and it was patched last month. Microsoft is urging macOS users to ensure that their version of MacOS Monterey is updated with the latest patch. The company also took time to promote its own Defender for Endpoint enterprise security solution, which was able to prevent those exploits even before Apple patched them.

There have been previous TCC exploits, including one that utilizes Apple’s built in Time Machine utility, that have since been patched as well. It’s always highly advised to keep all of your devices updated with the latest patches to prevent possible exploits like this. Specialization is key in an exploding AI chatbot market

Amid an exploding market for AI chatbots, companies that target their virtual assistants to specialized enterprise sectors may get a firmer foothold than general chatbots, according to Gartner analysts. That’s not news to Zowie, which claims to be the only AI-powered chatbot technology specifically built for ecommerce companies that use customer support to drive sales – no small feat in an industry in which customer service teams answer tens of thousands of repetitive questions daily. Today, the company announced it has secured $14 million in series A funding led by Tiger Global Management, bringing its total to $20 million.

Chatbots — sometimes referred to as virtual assistants — are built on conversational AI platforms (CAIP) that combine speech-based technology, natural language processing and machine learning tools to develop applications for use across many verticals. 

The CAIP market is extremely diverse, both in vendor strategies and in the enterprise needs that vendors target, says Magnus Revang, a Gartner research vice president covering AI, chatbots and virtual assistants.

The CAIP market is comprised of about 2,000 vendors worldwide. As a result, companies looking to implement AI chatbot technology often struggle with vendor selection, according to a 2020 Gartner report coauthored by Revang, “Making Sense of the Chatbot and Conversational AI Platform Market.

The report points out that In a market where no one CAIP vendor is vastly ahead of the pack, companies will need to select the provider best fit for their current short and midterm needs. 

The secret sauce in the AI chatbot market

That is Zowie’s secret sauce: specialization. Specifically, the company focuses on the needs of ecommerce providers, Maya Schaefer, Zowie’s chief executive officer and cofounder, told VentureBeat. The platform enables brands to improve their customer relationships and start generating revenue from customer service. 

Plenty of other CAIPs provide services for companies that sell products. But their solutions are also targeted to other verticals, such as banking, telecom and insurance.  Examples include Boost AI, Solvvy and Ada. Other chatbots — Ada is an example — can also be geared for use in the financial technology and software-as-a-service industries to answer questions, for instance, about a non- functioning system.

Zowie is built using the company’s automation technology, ‘Zowie X1’, to analyze the meaning and sentiment to find repetitive questions and trends. 

Zowie claims to automate 70% of inquiries ecommerce brands typically receive, such as “where’s my package?” or “how can I change my shipping address?” she says. The solution also includes a suite of tools that allows agents to provide personalized care and product recommendations, she says.

For example, if a customer says, “I would like help choosing new shoes” the system hands the request to a live product expert.

Before implementation, the platform analyzes a customer’s historical chats, frequently asked questions and knowledge base to automatically learn which questions to automate. It uses AI capabilities to analyze new questions and conversations, delivering more automation. 

By analyzing patterns, the AI chatbot can tell when something new or unusual is happening and alerts the customer service team, Schaefer said.

Live agents may also have difficulties upselling customers, so Zowie gives unique insights about customers to agents–what product they are looking at, did they order before and if so, what did they order – and has a direct product catalog integration which enables agents to send product suggestions in the form of a carousel, she added.

Time to optimization

In 2019, Schaefer and cofounder Matt Ciolek developed the all-in-one, modular CAIP designed for building highly customizable chatbots. Schaefer estimates that within six weeks of implementation, Zowie answers about 92% of customer inquiries such as “where’s my package?” and “what are the store hours?”

“Managers and agents don’t have to think about how to improve customer experience — our system will detect new trends and propose how to optimize the system automatically,” she said. “In a way, we automate the automation.”

A Dead by Daylight dating sim will arrive this summer

Behaviour Interactive has shed some light on what’s ahead for its massively popular horror franchise . One of the more surprising announcements was for a spinoff game that will take the horror-heavy series in a completely new direction — it’s a dating sim.

developer Psyop is working on the visual novel, which is called Hooked on You: A Dead by Daylight Dating Sim. Instead of desperately trying to avoid killers like The Trapper and The Spirit, you’ll be able to flirt with them on Murderer’s Island. Just don’t expect to hook up with licensed characters like or .

Behaviour says the stories you’ll discover in Hooked on You won’t be canon, though they’ll offer a blend of humor, romance and — since this is a DBD game after all — horror. The studio notes that many DBD fans have been asking for a dating sim set in that universe. They won’t have to wait too long to play it, either. Hooked on You will arrive on Steam this summer.

A ton of other DBD news has emerged ahead of the game’s sixth anniversary, including details about the next chapter, called Roots of Dread. It includes a new map called Garden of Joy, which is not quite as euphoric as its name suggests.

The latest terrifying killer, The Dredge, is an amorphous mass of limbs that can teleport between lockers to catch survivors unaware. Roots of Dread also introduces a new survivor named Haddie Kaur. PC players can try the chapter on the Public Test Build (PTB) today. It’ll arrive on all platforms on June 7th.

Looking slightly further ahead, Behaviour announced a couple more upcoming crossovers, including an unexpected one with Attack on Titan. The studio says fans have been asking for content based on anime and manga. The first partnership of its kind will soon introduce 10 Attack on Titan-inspired outfits for DBD killers and survivors. Among them are an Eren Yeager skin for Dwight, a Hange-inspired look for Zarina and an Armored Titan outfit for The Oni.

In addition, DBD is delving back into the world of Resident Evil with another chapter based on that classic franchise. Nemesis, Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy , and more characters from the series will join them later this year as part of the Resident Evil: Project W chapter.

Elsewhere, Dead by Daylight Mobile is getting a major update that will include changes to leaderboards, social systems, the control layout and visual performance. The activities and rewards systems are being revamped too. The update recently debuted in Japan. It will hit the US in a closed beta in the next few weeks before a broader rollout.

Some changes are on the way to the core PC and console game as well. Behavior says it will soon rework around 40 killer and survivor perks to freshen things up. A new system to get folks into games faster will reward those who queue up for whichever role (survivor or killer) has a smaller player count.

Meanwhile, starting today on the PTB, players can try a useful new preset feature. You can create custom loadouts with preferred perks and outfits for killers and survivors. That could help speed things up before you start a match.

Seven teenagers arrested in connection with the Lapsus$ hacking group

City of London Police have arrested seven teenagers due to their suspected connections with a hacking group that is believed to be the recently prolific Lapsus$ group, BBC News reports.

“The City of London Police has been conducting an investigation with its partners into members of a hacking group,” Detective Inspector Michael O’Sullivan of the City of London Police said in a statement to The Verge. “Seven people between the ages of 16 and 21 have been arrested in connection with this investigation and have all been released under investigation. Our enquiries remain ongoing.”

Lapsus$ has taken responsibility for some major security breaches at tech companies, including Nvidia, Samsung, Ubisoft, Okta, and Microsoft. On Wednesday, reports surfaced indicating an Oxford-based teenager is the mastermind of the group. City of London Police did not say if this teenager was among those arrested.

At least one member of Lapsus$ was also apparently involved with a data breach at EA, cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs reported on Wednesday in an extensive article about the group. Vice corroborated the group’s involvement in that breach in its own article on Thursday, noting that it was “emblematic of Lapsus$’s subsequent and massive hacks.”

The suspected mastermind’s identity was apparently revealed by angry customers doxing him. According to Krebs’ report, the group’s leader purchased Doxbin, a site where people can share or find personal information on others, last year, but was a poor owner of the site. He apparently gave up control in January but leaked “the entire Doxbin data set” to Telegram, and the Doxbin community retaliated by doxing him.

BBC News says it spoke to the teenager’s father, who was apparently unaware of his involvement with the group. “I had never heard about any of this until recently. He’s never talked about any hacking, but he is very good on computers and spends a lot of time on the computer,” the father said, according to BBC News. “I always thought he was playing games. We’re going to try to stop him from going on computers.”

Adobe has built a deepfake tool, but it doesn’t know what to do with it

Deepfakes have made a huge impact on the world of image, audio, and video editing, so why isn’t Adobe, corporate behemoth of the content world, getting more involved? Well, the short answer is that it is — but slowly and carefully. At the company’s annual Max conference today, it unveiled a prototype tool named Project Morpheus that demonstrates both the potential and problems of integrating deepfake techniques into its products.

Project Morpheus is basically a video version of the company’s Neural Filters, introduced in Photoshop last year. These filters use machine learning to adjust a subject’s appearance, tweaking things like their age, hair color, and facial expression (to change a look of surprise into one of anger, for example). Morpheus brings all those same adjustments to video content while adding a few new filters, like the ability to change facial hair and glasses. Think of it as a character creation screen for humans.

The results are definitely not flawless and are very limited in scope in relation to the wider world of deepfakes. You can only make small, pre-ordained tweaks to the appearance of people facing the camera, and can’t do things like face swaps, for example. But the quality will improve fast, and while the feature is just a prototype for now with no guarantee it will appear in Adobe software, it’s clearly something the company is investigating seriously.

What Project Morpheus also is, though, is a deepfake tool — which is potentially a problem. A big one. Because deepfakes and all that’s associated with them — from nonconsensual pornography to political propaganda — aren’t exactly good for business.

Now, given the looseness with which we define deepfakes these days, Adobe has arguably been making such tools for years. These include the aforementioned Neural Filters, as well as more functional tools like AI-assisted masking and segmentation. But Project Morpheus is obviously much more deepfakey than the company’s earlier efforts. It’s all about editing video footage of humans — in ways that many will likely find uncanny or manipulative.

Changing someone’s facial expression in a video, for example, might be used by a director to punch up a bad take, but it could also be used to create political propaganda — e.g. making a jailed dissident appear relaxed in court footage when they’re really being starved to death. It’s what policy wonks refer to as a “dual-use technology,” which is a snappy way of saying that the tech is “sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit.”

This, no doubt, is why Adobe didn’t once use the word “deepfake” to describe the technology in any of the briefing materials it sent to The Verge. And when we asked why this was, the company didn’t answer directly but instead gave a long answer about how seriously it takes the threats posed by deepfakes and what it’s doing about them.

Adobe’s efforts in these areas seem involved and sincere (they’re mostly focused on content authentication schemes), but they don’t mitigate a commercial problem facing the company: that the same deepfake tools that would be most useful to its customer base are those that are also potentially most destructive.

Take, for example, the ability to paste someone’s face onto someone else’s body — arguably the ur-deepfake application that started all this bother. You might want such a face swap for legitimate reasons, like licensing Bruce Willis’ likeness for a series of mobile ads in Russia. But you might also be creating nonconsensual pornography to harass, intimidate, or blackmail someone (by far the most common malicious application of this technology).

Regardless of your intent, if you want to create this sort of deepfake, you have plenty of options, none of which come from Adobe. You can hire a boutique deepfake content studio, wrangle with some open-source software, or, if you don’t mind your face swaps being limited to preapproved memes and gifs, you can download an app. What you can’t do is fire up Adobe Premiere or After Effects. So will that change in the future?

It’s impossible to say for sure, but I think it’s definitely a possibility. After all, Adobe survived the advent of “Photoshopped” becoming shorthand for digitally edited images in general, and often with negative connotations. And for better or worse, deepfakes are slowly losing their own negative associations as they’re adopted in more mainstream projects. Project Morpheus is a deepfake tool with some serious guardrails (you can only make prescribed changes and there’s no face-swapping, for example), but it shows that Adobe is determined to explore this territory, presumably while gauging reactions from the industry and public.

It’s fitting that as “deepfake” has replaced “Photoshopped” as the go-to accusation of fakery in the public sphere, Adobe is perhaps feeling left out. Project Morpheus suggests it may well catch up soon.

Nvidia’s new liquid-cooled GPUs are heading to data centers

Nvidia is taking some notes from the enthusiast PC building crowd in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers. The company announced two new liquid-cooled GPUs during its Computex 2022 keynote, but they won’t be making their way into your next gaming PC.

Instead, the H100 (announced at GTC earlier this year) and A100 GPUs will ship as part of HGX server racks toward the end of the year. Liquid cooling isn’t new for the world of supercomputers, but mainstream data center servers haven’t traditionally been able to access this efficient cooling method (not without trying to jerry-rig a gaming GPU into a server, that is).

In addition to HGX server racks, Nvidia will offer the liquid-cooled versions of the H100 and A100 as slot-in PCIe cards. The A100 is coming in the second half of 2022, and the H100 is coming in early 2023. Nvidia says “at least a dozen” system builders will have these GPUs available by the end of the year, including options from Asus, ASRock, and Gigabyte.

Data centers account for around 1% of the world’s total electricity usage, and nearly half of that electricity is spent solely on cooling everything in the data center. As opposed to traditional air cooling, Nvidia says its new liquid-cooled cards can reduce power consumption by around 30% while reducing rack space by 66%.

Instead of an all-in-one system like you’d find on a liquid-cooled gaming GPU, the A100 and H100 use a direct liquid connection to the processing unit itself. Everything but the feed lines is hidden in the GPU enclosure, which itself only takes up one PCIe slot (as opposed to two for the air-cooled versions).

Data centers look at power usage effectiveness (PUE) to gauge energy usage — essentially a ratio between how much power a data center is drawing versus how much power the computing is using. With an air-cooled data center, Equinix had a PUE of about 1.6. Liquid cooling with Nvidia’s new GPUs brought that down to 1.15, which is remarkably close to the 1.0 PUE data centers aim for.

In addition to better energy efficiency, Nvidia says liquid cooling provides benefits for preserving water. The company says millions of gallons of water are evaporated in data centers each year to keep air-cooled systems operating. Liquid cooling allows that water to recirculate, turning “a waste into an asset,” according to head of edge infrastructure at Equinix Zac Smith.

Although these cards won’t show up in the massive data centers run by Google, Microsoft, and Amazon — which are likely using liquid cooling already — that doesn’t mean they won’t have an impact. Banks, medical institutions, and data center providers like Equinix compromise a large portion of the data centers around today, and they could all benefit from liquid-cooled GPUs.

Nvidia says this is just the start of a journey to carbon-neutral data centers, as well. In a press release, Nvidia senior product marketing manager Joe Delaere wrote that the company plans “to support liquid cooling in our high-performance data center GPUs and our Nvidia HGX platforms for the foreseeable future.”

How to breed villagers in Minecraft

Interested in making your favorite Minecraft village larger? The only way to do this (without cheats) is to make your villagers start breeding. That helps you build out a village and can eventually lead to more trading opportunities and other advantages.

However, breeding Minecraft villagers isn’t always easy. Circumstances need to be just right, which means you have some work to do if you really want to expand a particular village. Here’s everything you need to encourage villager romance and get some families started.

How to breed villagers

Step 1: Find your village of choice. Ideally, it will already have a few villagers around, but that’s not necessary if you are willing to boat or cart in villagers from other locations. Most importantly, it should be monster-free, since empty villages can often contain pillagers, zombies, or other enemies.

Step 2: Make sure you have at least two villagers. Again, you can boat or cart them into the village if you have to.

Step 3: Move your villagers close together. They really need to be in the same building to breed. This isn’t always easy, because villagers don’t always naturally cohabitate. You can simply move two of them close and then build a building around them if you want, or find an existing structure with enough room in it and move your villagers into it.

Step 4: Start making some beds. We have a whole guide on how to do it! The key for breeding villagers is to create enough beds for every villager plus one. Villagers generally won’t breed unless there is an extra bed available for the child. Place the beds, including the extra one, near your villagers.

Step 5: If possible, trade with your villagers to make sure they are active and functioning properly. Now, you’ll need to get them in the mood. Villagers have a specific mating mode they go into, and one of the best ways to encourage it is to give them food — a fair amount of food, too. You must feed each villager in your couple one of the following:

  • 3 bread

  • 12 carrots

  • 12 potatoes

  • 12 beetroots

Lob the food into your villagers once you have collected enough. Eventually, hearts will start to appear over the villagers. That means you did everything right.

Step 6: Wait for the villagers to spawn a baby. You can, uhh, stay and watch if you want — this usually only takes a few minutes at the most once the heart icons start appearing, but you can also go off and explore for a little bit if you want. A child villager will eventually pop into existence next to the two villagers.

Step 7: The child villager will grow up in about half an hour or so … but that’s just one new villager. If you really want to build out your village, you should absolutely create a farm. Pair up a jobless villager with a composter, and they should turn to farming all by themselves. Farmers will automatically supply nearby villagers with their own food, which means you don’t have to keep feeding villagers yourself to get them to breed.

Step 8: Expand your village by continuing to build structures and add extra beds so there’s always at least one spare bed. Before long, you will find your village populating itself. From here, the sky is the limit: You can create a whole city if you want, as long as you keep everything accessible to your villagers.

This MacOS Trojan stealthily lifts your data, says Microsoft

You might think that your Mac is invulnerable to viruses and other security threats, but you might want to think again. As part of its commitment to intelligence sharing and collaboration, Microsoft recently exposed the evolution of a MacOS Trojan that can stealthily lift your personal data.

First spotted in September 2020, Microsoft says this piece of malware, known as UpdateAgent,  has increasingly progressed to “sophisticated capabilities.” Though it also indicated that the latest two versions are still more “refined,” Microsoft does warn that the malware is again being developed, and more updates could come soon.

It is so bad, that Microsoft believes this malware can be leveraged to fetch more dangerous payloads beyond just the adware that it is already injecting into victim machines.

But how does it work? Per Microsoft, the UpdateAgent malware can impersonate real software, and then take Mac functionalities under its own control. It is usually first installed to victim Macs by automated downloads without a user’s consent, or advertisement pop-ups, which impersonate video applications and support agents. UpdateAgent can even bypass Gatekeeper, which usually makes sure that only trusted apps can run on Macs. The Malware then takes over a machine and performs malicious acts like injecting adware.

Microsoft worked with Amazon Web Services to pull the URLs used by UpdateAgent to inject adware, but the UpdateAgent campaign has steadily evolved. It went from basic information stealer in December 2020, to the ability to fetch and deliver .DMG files in February 2021, to being able to fetch and deliver .ZIP files in March 2021.

Later in August, the malware expanded its reconnaissance function to scan and collect System_profile and SPHardwaretype information from victim machines. At its worst point in August, the malware even used permissions and wrote its own code to trick Gatekeeper into thinking it’s not even there.

“UpdateAgent is uniquely characterized by its gradual upgrading of persistence techniques, a key feature that indicates this trojan will likely continue to use more sophisticated techniques in future campaigns,” Microsoft said Microsoft.

Microsoft wasn’t clear which versions of MacOS are impacted by UpdateAgent, but it did have some advice that goes beyond using antivirus software. It pointed to using the Microsoft Edge browser, which can block and scan for malicious websites. Other tips include restricting access to privileged resources, installing apps only from the app store, and running the latest versions of MacOS and other applications.

Imec launches sustainable semiconductor program

Imec, a semiconductor research accelerator in Leuven, Belgium, announced the first fruits of the Sustainable Semiconductor Technologies and Systems (SSTS) research program aimed at reducing the semiconductor industry’s carbon footprint. Early participants include large system companies such as Apple and Microsoft and semiconductor suppliers such as ASM, ASML, Kurita, Screen and Tokyo Electron. 

Today, the semiconductor industry plays a small role in global carbon emissions. But the industry is facing unprecedented demand for new chips. A big concern is that growing demand could increase the semiconductor industry’s relative proportion of carbon emissions, particularly as other industries reduce their carbon impact. 

Semiconductor manufacturing requires large amounts of energy and water and can create hazardous waste. In the short run, the SSTS effort will help companies understand and optimize their systems to minimize carbon emissions. Eventually, better metrics could also help mitigate other problems caused by semiconductor production.

A growing concern in the semiconductor industry

Researchers have shown that nearly 75% of a mobile device’s carbon footprint comes from its fabrication and half of this comes from the chips. The SSTS team has already built a virtual fab to simulate the environmental impact of future logic and memory devices. 

The SSTS team is also starting to enrich and simulate data with and check the representativeness of models used. Lars-Åke Ragnarsson, program director at SSTS, told VentureBeat that the early efforts are prototypes of simulated fabs rather than true digital twins. However, the hope is that future efforts will allow enterprises to weave these models into digital twins to help optimize ongoing manufacturing operations. 

He stressed the importance of sharing emissions’ data across the entire manufacturing lifecycle and all steps in the supply chain. By developing metrics, everyone will get a better idea of what actions can improve sustainability versus lessen it. For example, today, some companies may quantify carbon footprint on a per-chip basis, while others do it on a per dollar of product basis. Unified standards will provide an apples-to-apples comparison on the merits of various adjustments. 

Some different sources of carbon emissions include electrical consumption, direct emissions and water usage. The group is already showing the potential impact of higher efficiency pumps and recovering hydrogen. Down the road, they are hoping to identify high-impact processes for logic and memory technologies where manufacturers should focus efforts. They also want to develop guidelines for manufacturers, fabless companies, equipment providers and material providers that could help minimize carbon impact.

Early start

The project is still in its infancy. Currently, chip manufacturing only accounts for about 0.1% of global carbon emissions. But the concern is that without any new approach, they could grow by three times by 2030 and have an outsized impact on carbon emissions as other industries reduce their carbon footprint. “The goal should be to say at 0.1%,” Ragnarsson said.

They plan to add other environmental aspects, such as material costs, down the road. Other tools will make it easier to explore how new manufacturing and computing techniques such as molecular computing might impact the climate footprint. They also plan to develop tools to help share these findings and broader lifecycle data with other stakeholders such as politicians and citizens.

Blizzard will show off more ‘Overwatch 2’ on June 16th

The first  just wrapped up today, and Blizzard is already preparing to reveal what’s next for the game with an event on June 16th. Details about what to expect are fairly thin for now, though the studio will provide some info on the next PvP beta as well as its plan for the coming months.

Blizzard could be hoping to use the event to address some of the criticism about the first beta. Along with and four fresh maps, the beta introduced another game mode, an upgraded game engine, major changes to many heroes and, most significantly, a shift in the number of team members from six to five.

I loved the beta, for the most part (I’m not a fan of the revamped scoreboard at all). It was only a slice of what Overwatch 2 will eventually become, but it still felt fresh. However, some critics felt that the beta after two years without significant content updates for the original game. Others suggested it was .

“Overwatch as a world, as a universe, is deeply personal to the team; something that we pour our time, creative energies and passion into,” game director Aaron Keller . “It can be scary putting something that means so much to you out there for other people to look at. Especially when you know that it’s not finished and you’re asking for people’s real and valid criticisms of what you’ve made. But the reason we do it is important — to make a better game, and it’s our players and our community that make it possible.”

The Overwatch 2 team it focused on testing specific elements in the first beta, such as the new maps, shift to 5v5, balance and stability of the build and servers. It promised that more features, heroes and maps will be introduced in upcoming betas. Blizzard will surely try to convince the doubters that it’s on the right track with Overwatch 2, hopefully by revealing some more major updates next month. 

In the meantime, a new event just started in the original game, offering the chance to snag some new versions of fan-favorite skins and play some limited-time modes. That could help players pass the time until the next beta, whenever that may start.
