Want to make robots run faster? Try letting AI take control

Quadrupedal robots are becoming a familiar sight, but engineers are still working out the full capabilities of these machines. Now, a group of researchers from MIT says one way to improve their functionality might be to use AI to help teach the bots how to walk and run.

Usually, when engineers are creating the software that controls the movement of legged robots, they write a set of rules about how the machine should respond to certain inputs. So, if a robot’s sensors detect x amount of force on leg y, it will respond by powering up motor a to exert torque b, and so on. Coding these parameters is complicated and time-consuming, but it gives researchers precise and predictable control over the robots.

An alternative approach is to use machine learning — specifically, a method known as reinforcement learning that functions through trial and error. This works by giving your AI model a goal known as a “reward function” (e.g., move as fast as you can) and then letting it loose to work out how to achieve that outcome from scratch. This takes a long time, but it helps if you let the AI experiment in a virtual environment where you can speed up time. It’s why reinforcement learning, or RL, is a popular way to develop AI that plays video games.

This is the technique that MIT’s engineers used, creating new software (known as a “controller”) for the university’s research quadruped, Mini Cheetah. Using reinforcement learning, they were able to achieve a new top-speed for the robot of 3.9m/s, or roughly 8.7mph. You can watch what that looks like in the video below:

As you can see, Mini Cheetah’s new running gait is a little ungainly. In fact, it looks like a puppy scrabbling to accelerate on a wooden floor. But, according to MIT PhD student Gabriel Margolis (a co-author of the research along with postdoc fellow Ge Yang), this is because the AI isn’t optimizing for anything but speed.

“RL finds one way to run fast, but given an underspecified reward function, it has no reason to prefer a gait that is ‘natural-looking’ or preferred by humans,” Margolis tells The Verge over email. He says the model could certainly be instructed to develop a more flowing form of locomotion, but the whole point of the endeavor is to optimize for speed alone.

Margolis and Yang say a big advantage of developing controller software using AI is that it’s less time-consuming than messing about with all the physics. “Programming how a robot should act in every possible situation is simply very hard. The process is tedious because if a robot were to fail on a particular terrain, a human engineer would need to identify the cause of failure and manually adapt the robot controller,” they say.

By using a simulator, engineers can place the robot in any number of virtual environments — from solid pavement to slippery rubble — and let it work things out for itself. Indeed, the MIT group says its simulator was able to speed through 100 days’ worth of staggering, walking, and running in just three hours of real time.

Some companies that develop legged robots are already using these sorts of methods to design new controllers. Others, though, like Boston Dynamics, apparently rely on more traditional approaches. (This makes sense given the company’s interest in developing very specific movements — like the jumps, vaults, and flips seen in its choreographed videos.)

There are also faster-legged robots out there. Boston Dynamics’ Cheetah bot currently holds the record for a quadruped, reaching speeds of 28.3 mph — faster than Usain Bolt. However, not only is Cheetah a much bigger and more powerful machine than MIT’s Mini Cheetah, but it achieved its record running on a treadmill and mounted to a lever for stability. Without these advantages, maybe AI would give the machine a run for its money.

Call of Duty has stricter gun control measures than the US

is taking on cheaters in some inventive ways. For one thing, it’s literally taking away their guns. When the Ricochet anti-cheat system detects someone who’s breaking the rules, they may lose their weapons (as well as their dignity). The cheaters can’t even defend themselves with their fists.

“We don’t expect many clips of this to find their way online, but we have seen it in action and the reactions from cheaters are always priceless,” the Ricochet team wrote. features a short clip of an undoubtedly upstanding member of the community encountering a now-harmless cheater.

The Disarm measure is one of several actions Ricochet takes against cheaters. “When a bad actor is detected, we hit them with something from our mitigation toolbox (or all of them at once if we’re feeling spicy) and analyze the data from the machine determined to be cheating,” the team behind it wrote. “Beyond [our] mission to combat unfair play, we have a second somewhat secret mission to annoy as many cheaters as we can.”

Other mitigation measures include Damage Shield, which reduces the damage those who play fairly take from cheaters. “If you’re being shot and see your health slowly trickle down, you know it’s likely a cheater on the other end of the battle,” the blog post reads. The ne’er-do-well may realize that their opponent has Damage Shield enabled. Not only will they waste their ammo, they may figure out they’ve been caught in the act. Another mitigation technique is Cloaking. When a cheater fires at a legitimate player, the latter may become invisible to the rule-breaker.

Activision said the anti-cheat system has led to a “significant” drop in cheaters in some respects, though there have been “some unfortunate increases.” That’s part of the perennial cat-and-mouse battle it’s in with cheaters, who are always looking for new exploits. Since late April, though, Activision has banned more than 180,000 players across both  and . The Ricochet system will also be used in a new interpretation of , which will arrive later this year.

WhatsApp now lets you control who can see your profile

WhatsApp is now letting you decide who gets to view certain aspects of your profile.

This week, Meta’s popular messaging and calling app announced via a tweet that it is offering new privacy options for its users, including the ability to choose “who from your contact list can see your Profile Photo, About, and Last Seen status.

According to a WhatsApp’s Help Center page on the matter, your privacy settings, unless they are reconfigured, allow the following: All users can add you to groups. Contacts can view your status updates. All users can view your read receipts, profile picture, Last Seen, and About information.

But if you choose to configure WhatsApp’s new privacy settings, you’ll have more control over who can view the aforementioned profile information. Profile information such as your photo, Last Seen, About, and status can all be adjusted to one of four privacy options: Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except, and Nobody. Essentially all of these options let you choose the visibility of your profile information based on the audience you’d like to have access to it.

It is worth noting, however, that these new privacy settings do come with some caveats: Not sharing your Last Seen means you can’t see the Last Seen of others. WhatsApp does not offer a way to adjust “who can see when you’re online or typing …”

In addition to selecting who can view your profile information, WhatsApp also lets you decide who can can view your read receipts and who can add you to groups. Not sharing read receipts also results in you not being able to view others’ read receipts. Group chats still offer read receipts regardless of your settings. If one of your friends doesn’t have read receipts enabled, that also stops you from seeing “if they’ve viewed your status updates.”

On Android and iOS, you can access these settings by navigating to Settings > Account > Privacy.

Instagram expands Sensitive Content Control feature

Instagram is letting its users have more control over the content they see in search results and in content recommendations from the popular photo and video sharing app.

On Monday, Instagram announced that starting today, it would be updating and expanding its current Sensitive Content Control feature to allow its users to have more control over how much sensitive content they see in various sections of the app, such as: Explore, Search, Reels, Accounts You Might Follow, Hashtag Pages, and feed recommendations.


The updated version of the Sensitive Content Control feature is expected to “be available to everyone in the coming weeks.” According to screenshots provided in Instagram’s announcement, the new version of this feature only filters out content from accounts you’re not following and still allows you to see all content from those you choose to follow. In terms of what “sensitive content” is, some examples that Instagram offers include “topics like drugs or firearms.”

The newly expanded feature will also offer three control options: More, Standard, and Less. More has less content restrictions and so you’ll likely see *more* sensitive content. Standard is the middle ground option that permits some sensitive content. And Less, has more content restrictions which means you’ll likely see *less* sensitive content. Users under the age of 18 won’t be able to enable the More option.

When the expanded Sensitive Content Control feature becomes available to you, here’s how to access it:

Open the Instagram mobile app. Select the Profile icon > Select the Menu icon in the top right > Select Settings > Select Account > Choose Sensitive Content Control.

How to control all your PC fans using Fan Control

You can control your PC fans through voltage limiters and BIOS tweaks, but an easier and more intuitive method is to use a utility designed to control all your fans at once. Fan Control is a great tool for doing exactly what its name suggests, giving you complete control over your system’s fans, including your CPU and GPU fans, plus any water cooling pumps that you may have connected to fan headers.

Fan Control is an all-in-one solution to system cooling management, and though it’s a little complicated and assumes a certain level of expertise, it’s still relatively easy to learn with a little help. That’s where we come in: Here’s how to use Fan Control to manage all of your system’s fans.

Note: This particular software is available on Github and is developed by an independent developer. We used it for a couple of weeks on a desktop PC running Windows 10 and didn’t face any concerning issues. Having said that, we do not take responsibility for any potential damage that it may cause to your system. Please download and use this software at your own risk.

How to use Fan Control

Fan Control is available free of cost from its release repository on Github. According to the developers, the drivers and the backend portion of the tool have not been created from scratch. Instead, they have managed to repurpose a bunch of existing hardware libraries and simply added a user interface on top. Thus, any hardware compatibility issue completely depends on LibreHardwareMonitor and NvAPIWrapper.

Step 1: Download Fan Control from the official Github release repository. Unzip the package and store all the files in a folder. To run the tool, open the FanControl.exe file.

Step 2: The main home screen of the software is divided into two sections: Controls and Speeds. Each card under the Controls section corresponds to a card in the Speeds section. For instance, the first card, Fan Control #1, should be the control for Fan #1. If you have connected the CPU cooler or a liquid cooler pump to the CPU fan header, it should be Fan #1 by default. The rest should be all additional case fans along with a dedicated card for the GPU fans.

Step 3: Test each fan to ensure that it is performing the correct action by sensing the change in fan noise and airflow. This can be done by controlling the fan speeds manually. Select the Three-dot menu on each fan control card, enable the Manual control option, and then click on the toggle to enable the slider. Use the slider to increase or decrease the fan or pump speed, which will be denoted in the corresponding fan speed card below.

Step 4: Once you have checked all the fans, rename them for ease of identification. Click on the title of each card and assign names accordingly. You might also see some additional cards under the Controls section, which are basically the headers on your motherboard that are not in use. You can hide these by selecting the option from the Three-dot menu on the top-right corner of each card.

Step 5: Remember, running your PC fans at their maximum speed might sound like a good option to increase cooling potential, but there are some drawbacks. Increasing the speed of your fans is going to make them noisy, and it affects the overall life cycle of the fans. Additionally, if you have any intake fans, you also bring in more dust, and we know how bad that can be for any electronic item.

Step 6: Apart from manually controlling your fan speeds, you can also create your own fan curves. Fan curves are graphs that show how fast your fan spins when your PC hits a certain temperature, making it easier to customize your cooling based on temperature and noise levels.

To add a fan curve select the Plus button on the bottom right to reveal a bunch of fan curves and temperature sensor options. The Graph fan curve option is the easiest as you can simply assign what percentage of the total fan speed a particular fan should run at a certain temperature.

Step 7: Once you select the Graph fan, a card should appear under the new Curves section. To configure the curve, we first need to select the source. Select the Temperature source option to reveal a menu with a variety of sensors that are embedded into your motherboard and other connected parts. Considering that the CPU and GPU are typically the hottest components in your PC, it is best to optimize airflow and create fan curves based on either of the two. Step 8: To create a CPU fan curve simply, select CPU package denoted under the Temperature source drop-down menu. The graph can be configured by selecting the Edit button. A new pop-up window should appear where you can tinker around by adding points on the graph or just entering the parameters at the bottom. Assign a particular percentage of the fan speed corresponding to the temperature. Once you are satisfied with your fan curve, select OK to save it. Similarly, you can create a GPU fan curve by selecting your GPU as the temperature source.

Step 9: After creating the fan curves, you can now assign them depending on the fans in your system. Disable manual control, and the option to select a curve should appear. Assign the correct fan curve for all your fans. The fan(s) on the CPU cooler or radiator and the watercooling pump should be assigned to the CPU fan curve so they behave according to the changes in CPU temperatures. If you have additional fans that pull in fresh air or exhaust hot air away from the GPU, it is best to assign them the GPU fan curve. By doing so, the fan(s) can automatically ramp up when the GPU is under heavy load, especially while gaming.

Step 10: The final step is to save all the configurations you made. Open the Three-dot menu on the top right of the software and select Save configuration. The software will create a configuration file with all your settings that can be easily imported or exported. This is an important step if you don’t wish to lose your settings.

Step 11: There are also some UI options that you can play around with by selecting the Hamburger icon on the top left of the software. It includes settings for colors and themes, enabling column mode, automatically running the software with Windows, and more.

How to Control Alexa from Your Windows 10 PC

Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa is typically associated with smart devices, from Amazon’s own Echo smart speaker line to compatible TVs, air conditioners, and more. But we don’t always mention that Alexa works just as well on Windows 10 and Windows 11 computer, which can be extremely useful if you prefer to use a PC at home, but still want easy voice control for your smart devices or security routines. Let’s look at how to get those Alexa features on your Windows computer and what to do with them.

Step 1: Update everything

Check that your Windows computer is fully updated and ready to go. You can download Alexa on Windows 10 or Windows 11, but you’ll want to make sure the version you have has the latest updates. This helps with both security and compatibility.

Step 2: Download the Alexa app

Microsoft has its own version of the Alexa app ready and waiting to be installed: Find the Alexa app on Microsoft’s site on your Windows PC, and select Get (or sometimes Install) to start the download. When the download is finished (Alexa doesn’t take up that much room), select Launch to begin.

Alexa will now start a setup wizard on your PC. Begin by selecting Get Started.

Then sign in with your Amazon account information.

The wizard will run you through a series of questions about how you want to use Alexa. When appropriate, select Agree & Continue to move on through the prompts. When you reach the Wake Word page, make sure the Wake Word is enabled — this makes Alexa much easier to use on a PC, and allows you to give her commands even if you are on the other side of the room. Select Allow at this point.

You will also have the option to start Alexa upon login, and to pin the Alexa app to your toolbar (it will look like a small, bluish circle). If you are intending to use your PC as your primary Alexa device for issuing voice commands and controlling your smart home, it’s a good idea to enable both these options. Select Finish when you are ready. Now, select Get Started once more, and the Alexa app will open with plenty of ideas about how to start using it. You’ll be asked to enable a few other capabilities at this point, but Alexa is installed and ready to go.

At some point, Alexa will also ask if you want to enable the voice assistant on the lock screen. This means Alexa can wait for the Wake Word even if your PC has locked and gone to screensaver. This feature can be useful if you plan on giving voice commands from around the room, not just when you are using Windows.

Step 4: Experiment with Windows-based voice commands

Alexa can do plenty on your PC immediately, so it’s a good idea to find useful commands you can use throughout the day. The Alexa app home screen will list places to get started if you aren’t sure, and the Things to Try section is a great follow-up. As always, the standard “Alexa” wake word is necessary for any command.

We suggest trying commands like asking Alexa to make a reminder, look at your calendar, or add something to a shopping list. You can also play music of your choice with the right music services connected to Alexa. You can choose to call or drop in on people on your contact list, and with Show Mode enabled, you can turn these calls into a video chat, too. You can also ask Alexa a range of questions, from what the weather will be like today to what’s a good video for cooking broccoli. Step 5: Connect your smart devices to Alexa and use them

You can also use Alexa on your PC to control any connected smart devices. Alexa has excellent compatibility with many popular smart device brands. but they need to be connected to the Alexa app in order for them to work.

The good news is that if you have connected any smart devices to Alexa in the past, Alexa on PC will automatically add them and allow you to control them. The bad news is that you can’t add new smart home devices to Alexa using the PC app. Instead, you should download the mobile Alexa app and add devices there. Google Stadia adds free trials for ‘Control’ and ‘Riders Republic’

Back in October, Google Stadia introduced free trials with its Hello Engineer game. While the service lets users try any game they want with a $10-per-month Pro subscription, it was the first time free users were given the chance to test a game before purchase. Now, according to 9to5Google, Stadia is giving free users the opportunity to take two more games for a spin before they have to buy them. One of those games is Control: Ultimate Edition, which recently just came out for the platform.

Ultimate Edition contains the core Control game, along with the expansions that were released for it. Like Hello Engineer, players will be able to test it out for 30 minutes before they have to decide whether to pay $40 for a copy. The other game is Ubisoft’s recently released Riders Republic, a massively multiplayer extreme sports game, where teams can battle each other on bikes, skis, snowboards and in flying wingsuits. Players will get the chance to try it out for two hours instead of just 30 minutes, perhaps because half an hour might barely be enough to cover tutorials when there are several extreme sports to choose from. Besides, Riders Republic isn’t cheap and costs $60 to purchase.

With the addition of these two games, we can probably expect Google to make more titles available for free trial in the future. It could be an effective way to get people who’d rather own the titles they play interested in purchasing from Stadia instead of from other gaming platforms.

Step 1: Update your drivers

Keeping your drivers up-to-date is the key to getting the best out of your graphics card. Before delving further into the Nvidia Control Panel, make sure that you’ve got the latest drivers that Nvidia has to offer.

Downloading Nvidia drivers is simple and can be done in two ways: via the Nvidia website or through the GeForce Experience program.

If you’re downloading straight from the Nvidia website, simply select your graphics card, press Search, and download the latest driver. If you’re not sure about the exact model of your card, check your PC specifications first.

Once the file has been downloaded, double click it and let the installation commence. During that time, your screen may go black at times — don’t worry about it.

GeForce Experience is a program that helps you update drivers, optimizes in-game settings, and more. It also alerts you when new drivers are available for download.

To use this method of updating your drivers, download the program and then install it. You may be prompted to create an account. Once that is done, simply launch GeForce Experience.

The program will automatically begin searching for new drivers. If any are found, you will be alerted at the top of the screen.

Choose Express Installation and let the drivers install. Your screen may occasionally go black during the installation — this is perfectly normal.

Step 2: Launch the Nvidia Control Panel

Before you proceed, make sure to restart your computer after the installation of new drivers.

Most owners of Nvidia graphics cards will have the Control Panel installed by default. This means that you likely won’t need to download it. However, if you will need to download it at any point, you can get it here:

There are two ways to launch the Control Panel. The easiest way is to simply right-click on the desktop and choose Nvidia Control Panel from the dropdown menu.

Alternatively, launch the Windows Start menu by clicking the Windows icon at the bottom-left of your screen. You can also press the Windows button on your keyboard, located similarly near the bottom-left side.

With the Start menu open, type in Nvidia Control Panel and then press Enter.

You can use individual games’ settings menus to decide your GPU settings, but optimizing the settings of your Nvidia card in the Control Panel may have a huge impact on your gaming experience. Smoother gameplay and better, sharper, brighter visuals are all a possibility when the settings are properly adjusted.

The Nvidia Control Panel is easy enough to navigate, but there are so many options to choose from, it may seem confusing at first. In order to find the best Nvidia settings for gaming or simply day-to-day performance, you will need to navigate the list of settings explained below.

Nvidia Control Panel — 3D Settings

The 3D Settings tab on the left-hand side of the Nvidia Control Panel is arguably the most important when it comes to gaming, but it’s equally important for creativity. To access all the options, simply click on Adjust Image Settings With Preview.

Below the moving Nvidia logo, select Use the Advanced 3D Image Settings and then click Apply at the bottom.

Switch to the Manage 3D Settings tab on the left side in order to edit all the available 3D settings.

Image sharpening

This setting enhances the visuals in your games, making them appear sharper and clearer. For the best performance, turn it On.

The sharpening level should be set to around 0.50 and the film grain to around 0.17, but feel free to play around.

If you see the option to turn on GPU Scaling, do that by ticking the box. This will enable scaling to the native resolution of your display.

Ambient occlusion

This setting is responsible for the shadows and environmental lighting in your games.

For the best balance between GPU load and great gameplay, set this to Performance.

Anisotropic filtering

Anisotropic filtering increases the visual quality of game textures when your camera is at a steep angle.

This setting should be set to Application-controlled.

Antialiasing — FXAA

This stands for Fast approximate anti-aliasing which is Nvidia’s screen-space anti-aliasing algorithm. You can turn this setting Off.

Antialiasing — Gamma correction

This corrects the brightness values in images enhanced by antialiasing. It’s usually best to turn this setting On.

Antialiasing — Mode

This is a general setting related to antialiasing, which in itself is a technique that smooths out images. Leave this at Application-Controlled.

Antialiasing — Transparency

The last AA setting applies to Nvidia’s technology of applying antialiasing to transparent textures. You can usually turn this Off.

Background Application Max Frame Rate

This controls the frames per second (fps) that your games and other applications will have when minimized. If you don’t have any performance issues, you can leave this Off.

If you feel you’d rather limit background frame rates, turn this on and set it to the bare minimum frame rate you want to target, such as 60 fps, or on older or weaker GPUs, 30 fps.


This setting should always be set to All, as it refers to which of the CUDA cores in your graphics card can be used.

DSR – Factors

DSR stands for Dynamic Super Resolution. This technology improves image quality by rendering the images and upscaling them to a higher resolution.

While this sounds good on paper, it’s a killer for your frame rates (fps), so it’s best to turn this setting Off.

DSR – Smoothness

Much like the previous DSR setting, this will only decrease your fps. As such, it’s better to turn it Off.

Low Latency Mode

Low Latency Mode ensures that the frames in your game are submitted into the render queue just when the graphics card requires them. Nvidia refers to this as “just in time frame scheduling”. This results in, as the name itself suggests, lower latency and higher frame rates.

To increase your fps, turn this setting On.

Max Frame Rate

This setting limits your fps to a certain number. Different games will be able to achieve different fps, and though the true limit of what you can experience will always be your monitor’s refresh rate, some games have heavily unlocked frame rates in menus, which can result in undue power drain on your GPU.

If you don’t want to limit your frame rates in any way, simply turn this setting Off. If you’d like to adjust this setting to match your monitor, keep reading.

Some competitive gamers like to set this option to double that of their monitor’s refresh rate. If you’re not sure about the refresh rate of your monitor, you can check it in Windows Settings.

In order to check your display’s refresh rate, click the Windows logo on the bottom-left side of the screen. Next, type in Advanced Display and click on View Advanced Display Info. Check the refresh rate and adjust this setting to match it. In our example, the limit would be 75.

Monitor technology

This setting will not be visible to all users. If you can see it, you can use it to turn on Nvidia’s G-Sync. Nvidia G-Sync is responsible for adjusting your monitor’s refresh rate to become dynamic, causing display refreshes only when a frame is sent from the GPU. It solves issues such as screen tearing.

G-Sync is a welcome addition on budget computers, but it’s not needed on modern desktops and monitors. If you’re using a mid-to-high-end setup, it’s best to leave this Off. Otherwise, turn it On.

Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing (MFAA)

This setting removes jagged edges and smooths out graphics, resulting in improved visuals. Unfortunately, this is a small gain for the price that your frame rates may have to pay.

For gaming, we recommend that you turn this setting Off.

OpenGL Rendering GPU

This option lets you choose which one of your graphics cards (if you have more than one) will be used for OpenGL. Pick your GPU from the dropdown menu and select it.

Power Management Mode

As the name implies, this setting is responsible for optimizing the power vs performance ratio of your graphics card.

If you don’t mind letting your GPU use maximum power and perhaps run a little hotter, select Prefer Maximum Performance.

Shader Cache

When turned on, this setting reduces processor usage. It’s optimal to turn it On.

Texture filtering — Anisotropic sample optimization

Anisotropic sample optimization limits the number of samples that are used by your GPU. Turn this setting On.

Texture filtering — Negative LOD bias

When turned on, this setting makes stationary images sharper and enables texture filtering. Toggle it to Allow.

Texture filtering — Quality

This setting lets you optimize texture filtering to value performance. Switch it to High Performance.

Texture filtering — Trilinear optimization

Trilinear optimization will usually be on by default. It smooths out textures in your games. If it happens to be turned off, make sure to switch it to on.

Threaded optimization

Threaded optimization allows your computer to utilize several processor cores at once. Turn this to Auto.

Triple buffering

When triple buffering is enabled, frames are rendered in one back buffer. Although there are some games that benefit from this setting, it’s best to turn it Off.

Vertical sync

Vsync synchronizes the frame rate with your monitor’s refresh rate. As it can limit your fps, it’s better to turn it Off unless you experience severe screen tearing issues.

Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames

This setting limits the number of frames that your processor prepares ahead of your GPU being able to process it.

For optimal performance, set this to 1.

Finishing up

Once you have adjusted all of these settings, click Apply on the bottom right-hand side to save the changes.

Nvidia Control Panel settings – Configure Surround, PhysX

Go back to the menu on the left-hand side and navigate to Configure Surround, PhysX.

On the right part of this section, you will find PhysX Settings. Switch that from Auto to the model of your GPU.

This section will help you optimize your display settings. Navigate to it on the left-hand side and go down the list as required.

Change resolution

Select the monitor that you are using at the top of this section. If you have multiple displays, you will have to repeat the steps for all of them.

Under Resolution, scroll down until you find the highest possible resolution in the PC section. Next, adjust the monitor’s refresh rate to the highest available.

Scroll down to the color settings and click on Use Nvidia Color Settings. Make sure that the desktop color depth is set to Highest (32-bit) and that the Output Dynamic Range is set to Full.

Click Apply to save all your changes.

Adjust desktop color settings

This section lets you play around with the color settings on your display. All the settings here are down to your personal preference. You can adjust Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma in the first row. Feel free to move the sliders and press Apply to see the result, as the changes are easily reverted.

You can also try out Digital Vibrance. This setting will increase color saturation and make the shades brighter. A value of around 70% to 80% may look best, but this depends on the game.

If you’ve made any changes, press Apply.

Adjust desktop size and position

You will notice that we’ve skipped over the next three sections: Rotate display, View HDCP status, and Set Up Digital Audio. All of these have no impact on gaming and won’t require adjustments.

In the Adjust Desktop Size and Position tab, pick the display you want to make changes to, and then look down toward the Scaling section.

You can choose the correct setting to pick here based on your needs.

  • For the highest fps possible at native resolution, pick No Scaling.
  • If you want the best mix of performance and visuals, make sure you Enabled GPU Scaling in 3D settings, and then set this option to Aspect ratio.
  • For games with low resolutions and pixel games pick Integer Scaling.

Don’t forget to make sure that the scaling is performed on the GPU by selecting that option in the dropdown menu below. Lastly, tick the box that says Override the Scaling Mode Set By Games and Programs.

Once you’re done, press Apply.

Set up G-Sync

Look back at the menu on the left-hand side. If this section is not visible to you, simply move on to the next step. If it is, it will let you decide whether or not to use Nvidia G-Sync.

Nvidia’s G-Sync synchronizes your monitor’s refresh rates to match the graphics card. However, on modern computers with powerful graphics cards and gaming monitors with higher refresh rates, this setting is almost obsolete. It can actually lower your gaming performance.

If you are playing on a budget or mid-range computer that is several years old, you can try out G-Sync by ticking the box next to Enable. However, if your PC is somewhat new, you should keep G-Sync off.

Set up multiple displays

This section is only useful to users who run multiple monitor setups. If that’s not you, jump down to the next step.

In this part of the Control Panel, you will be able to change your display configuration and which displays to use. If you have two or more monitors, you can drag their icons using your mouse. This lets you pick which display will act as your primary monitor.

In general, you should drag the icons to match the physical setup of your displays. You can move them above, below, to the right, or to the left, so all kinds of monitor setups can be configured here.

Adjust video color settings

This setting will help you optimize the color palette used in videos and games.

Nvidia Control Panel.

In the second question about color adjustments choose the second option — Nvidia Settings. Switch over to the Advanced tab below. Pick Full (0-255) and press Apply to save all changes.

Finalize the changes

As the last section dubbed Adjust Video Image Settings doesn’t require any changes, you are almost done. Your PC is now running on the best Nvidia Control Panel settings for gaming and overall performance.

In order to finalize the changes, quickly restart your computer. Once that’s done, run your favorite game and check to make sure that everything is stable. Feel free to go back to the Nvidia Control Panel to tweak the settings further if needed.

Quick guide to Nvidia Control Panel settings for gaming

If you want to quickly adjust your settings to increase frames per second and offer smooth gameplay, but don’t necessarily need to know what each setting does, follow the guide below.

Start by referring to steps one and two above: download the latest drivers and launch Nvidia Control Panel. Afterward, apply the following settings:

3D Settings

  • Image sharpening: Turn this On. Set the sharpening level to 0.50 and the film grain to 0.17.
  • Ambient occlusion: Set this to Performance.
  • Antialiasing — FXAA: Turn this Off.
  • Antialiasing — gamma correction: Turn this On.
  • Antialiasing — mode: Set this to Application-controlled.

  • MFAA: Turn this Off.
  • OpenGL Rendering GPU: Pick your GPU from the dropdown menu and select it.
  • Power Management Mode: Select Prefer Maximum Performance.
  • Shader Cache: Turn this On.
  • Texture filtering — anisotropic sample optimization: Turn this On.
  • Texture filtering — negative LOD bias: Set this to Allow.
  • Texture filtering — quality: Set this to High Performance.
  • Texture filtering — trilinear optimization: Turn this On.
  • Threaded optimization: Set this to Auto.

Press Apply to save all changes.

Display settings

Press Apply after completing each step.

  • Change resolution: Set the highest possible resolution and the highest refresh rate available. Select Use Nvidia Color Settings and set the color depth to the Highest, and the dynamic range to Full.
  • Adjust desktop color settings: Set Digital Vibrance to 70-80% and see if you like it.
  • Adjust desktop size and position: Refer to our full explanation to pick the right setting in this section.
  • Set up G-Sync: Turn G-Sync On if you are on a budget PC/monitor combo; otherwise, turn it Off.
  • Adjust video color settings: Select the option to Use Nvidia Settings. Pick Full (0-255).

Restart your computer to finalize the changes.

How to Open the Nvidia Control Panel in a Few Steps

The Nvidia Control Panel allows you to access all the features of your graphics card, so knowing how to open the Nvidia Control Panel allows you to quickly change your monitor and graphics card settings.

Although the Nvidia Control Panel isn’t readily apparent on your desktop, opening it is simple. We have a handful of ways to access it, as well as some tips for how to get the most out of the software.

How to open the Nvidia Control Panel

You can also find the Nvidia Control Panel through the Control Panel in Windows 10. However, recent versions of Windows have adopted a different look, making this route the most difficult. If you’re a hotkey fanatic, you can also use Windows Key + S and quickly search for the Nvidia Control Panel to pull it up.

What you can do in Nvidia Control Panel

Nvidia Control Panel is focused entirely on your graphics card. That includes the card itself, how it uses settings in games and applications, and how your monitor behaves. It’s a dense piece of software, so we can’t cover everything here, but we’ll hit the most important parts.

The Manage 3D Settings area is where you’ll spend a lot of your time. Here, you can tweak global settings like your antialiasing mode, max frame rate, and if you want to use G-Sync with your monitor. You can change these setting globally or on a program-by-program basis by switching the tab.

After that, the Change Resolution section is very important. As the name implies, you can change the resolution of your display here. More importantly, you can also change the refresh rate and color settings of your monitor. It’s important to check this section out when you buy a new monitor, especially if it has a high refresh rate.

Finally, the Set Up Multiple Displays option is critical if you have a multi-monitor setup. It allows you to quickly identify displays and drag them around to match how they’re sitting on your desk. You can also manage Nvidia Surround settings here if you want to stretch applications across multiple screens.

If you install Nvidia Control Panel with a GeForce graphics card, you’ll get GeForce Experience as well. Unlike Nvidia Control Panel, GeForce Experience is focused on gaming. You can’t tweak your graphics card or display settings. Still, GeForce Experience unlocks all the features available on Nvidia graphics cards.

The most important area is the Drivers tab, which allows you to see and install the latest drivers. We recommend checking here often, as new drivers add support and additional features to games as they’re released. If you’re experiencing a problem with your graphics card, this is the first place to look.

Over in the Settings area — found by clicking the cog icon next to your username — you’ll find a host of useful information about your PC. In addition to your specs, you can see if features like Nvidia GameStream, Ansel, and Freestyle are working on your graphics card. If you have one of the best graphics cards from the last few years, you should have all the features available.

Also in this area, the Games & Apps section is important. Here, you can point GeForce Experience to where you install your games and apps. GeForce Experience will automatically optimize your settings in supported games, so it’s worth scanning your computer for new additions occasionally.
