This MSI gaming laptop has a $450 price cut at GameStop today

MSI has been a bit of a juggernaut recently when it comes to its products; whether it’s motherboards, graphics cards, or computers, MSI has a little something for everybody, and if you’re looking for a gaming laptop, the MSI Alpha 17 is a great option. While gaming laptops can be expensive, especially when they’re 17 inches, this deal from GameStop brings it down to a very reasonable $840, down from $1,299 and a $459 discount.

Why you should buy the MSI Alpha 17

The most immediate concern when it comes to larger screens is whether the graphics card can handle running games on it, but the screen on the MSI Alpha 17 is a 144Hz Full HD monitor, so it isn’t going to be pushing the graphics card too much. Luckily, you also get a Radeon RX6600M GPU, roughly equivalent to an RTX 3060 if you’re unfamiliar with the AMD lineup, so it can easily handle both the resolution and refresh rate even on modern AAA games on relatively high settings. You can also grab a gaming monitor deal if you want to use your laptop as a desktop replacement for when you’re at home, and the GPU should handle it relatively well if you’re aiming for either high resolution or high refresh rate.

As for the CPU, you get a mid-tier Ryzen 7 5800H, roughly the same as an Intel i7, which means no bottlenecking with the GPU, and more than enough processing power to do simulation and strategy gaming, which tends to eat up resources. As for RAM, you get 16GB of DDR4, which is more than most folks need and gives you some headroom regarding apps and browser tabs. However, storage is on the low side, with only a 512GB SSD, meaning you’ll likely want to grab an external hard drive deal to help supplement that.

Overall, the MSI Alpha 17 is a great gaming laptop if you want a bigger screen without putting a dent in your wallet, which is usually the case with all-AMD PCs, and with the deal from GameStop, you can grab it for just $840, a $459 discount on its normal $1,299 price. On the other hand, if you want a few more options, check out these great gaming laptop deals.

Nvidia’s DLSS 3 may cut the RTX 4090’s insane power demands

Nvidia’s upcoming flagship, the RTX 4090, was tested in Cyberpunk 2077. It did a great job, but the results were far better with DLSS 3 enabled.

The card managed to surprise us in two ways. One, the maximum clock was higher than expected, and two, DLSS 3 actually managed to lower the card’s power draw by a considerable amount.

The card was tested in 1440p in a system with an Intel Core i9-12900K CPU, running the highest possible settings that Cyberpunk 2077 has to offer, meaning with ultra ray tracing enabled and on Psycho (max) settings. First, let’s look at how the GPU was doing without DLSS 3 enabled.

At the native resolution, the game was running at an average of 59 frames per second (fps) with a latency that hovered around 72 to 75 milliseconds (ms). The RTX 4090 was able to hit a whopping 2.8GHz clock speed, and that’s without overclocking — those are stock speeds, even though the maximum advertised clock speed for the RTX 4090 is just over 2.5GHz. This means an increase of roughly 13% without an overclock. During the demo, the GPU reached 100% utilization, but the temperatures stayed reasonable at around 55 degrees Celsius.

It’s a different story once DLSS 3 is toggled on, though. As Wccftech notes in its report, the GPU was using a pre-release version of DLSS 3, so these results might still change. For now, however, DLSS 3 is looking more and more impressive by the minute.

Enabling DLSS 3 also enables the DLSS Frame Generation setting, and for this test, the Quality preset was used. Once again, the GPU hit maximum utilization and a 2.8GHz boost clock, but the temperature was closer to 50C rather than 55C. The fps gains were nothing short of massive, hitting 119 fps and an average latency of 53ms. This means that the frame rates doubled while the latency was reduced by 30%.

We also have the power consumption figures for both DLSS 3 on and off, and this is where it gets even more impressive. Without DLSS 3, the GPU was consuming 461 watts of power on average, and the performance per watt (Frames/Joule) was rated at 0.135 points. Enabling DLSS 3 brought the wattage down to just 348 watts, meaning a reduction of 25%, while the performance per watt was boosted to 0.513 — nearly four times that of the test without DLSS 3.

The RTX 4090 among green stripes.

Wccftech has also tested this on an RTX 3090 Ti and found similar, albeit worse, results. The GPU still saw a boost in performance (64%) and a drop in power draw (10%), so the energy consumption numbers are not as impressive, confirming that DLSS 3 will offer a real upgrade over its predecessor.

The reason behind this unexpected difference in power consumption might lie in the way the GPU is utilized with DLSS 3 enabled. The load placed on the FP32 cores moves to the GPU tensor cores. This helps free up some of the load placed on the whole GPU and, as a result, cuts the power consumption.

It’s no news that the RTX 4090 is one power-hungry card, so it’s good to see that DLSS 3 might be able to bring those figures down a notch or two. Now, all we need is a game that can fully take advantage of this kind of performance. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 is set to release on October 12 and will arrive with a $1,599 price tag. With less than a month left until its launch, we should start seeing more comparisons and benchmarks soon.

This Dell gaming laptop just got a $519 price cut for Labor Day

Gamers can get in on the Labor Day sales action today, as Dell has discounted one of its most popular gaming laptops, the G15, from its regular price of $1,469 down to just $950. That’s an impressive savings of $519, which makes this laptop a steal, even when compared to some of the other Labor Day laptop sales taking place. Free shipping is included with your purchase of the Dell G15 gaming laptop, so act quickly and click over to Dell now to claim this Labor Day deal while you can.

Why you should buy the Dell G15 gaming laptop

Dell is one of the premier names when it comes to laptops, and while it has a lot of great options when it comes to taking on the best PC games, few are as simultaneously capable and affordable as the G15 gaming laptop. With impressive specs like an eight-core AMD Ryzen processor and 16GB of RAM, the G15 is often the go-to option for gamers who want more capability than the best budget laptops can provide, while still maintaining a reasonable price point. As built for this deal, the G15 sacrifices a little bit in speed with its internal storage space, as it has a spinning hard drive instead of a solid-state drive, but it makes up for that with a massive 1TB of storage space, which is plenty for housing even the largest of gaming libraries.

Like all of the best gaming laptops, this Dell G15 gaming laptop creates an amazing gaming experience. It does so with its 15.6-inch Full HD display that is able to produce playback at 120Hz. Most gaming laptops are only able to reach 60Hz, and the higher refresh rate makes for steadier gameplay with less likelihood of your gameplay image tearing, lagging, or breaking apart, even during the most action-packed of adventures. An Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card contributes mightily to this gaming experience, as it has 4GB of its own RAM and is comparable with some of the best graphics cards available. This gaming laptop is a great option for any gamer who’s looking to save some money, and for anyone looking for a starter laptop as they get into the gaming world.

At the Labor Day price of just $950, the Dell G15 gaming laptop is a steal. This makes for a savings of $519 from its regular price of $1,469, and free shipping is included with your purchase. Click over to Dell now to claim this deal while you can.

Sony has cut the PS5’s weight after raising its price

Sony has started to sell a new PlayStation 5 model that may not necessarily improve performance, but will be lighter and possibly easier to produce, Press Start has reported. The CFI-1200A/B digital/disc models have started to appear in Australia with a significant loss in weight.

According to packaging information, the digital version is 200 grams lighter and the disc version weighs 300 grams less than last year’s models, so the latter is roughly the same weight as the digital model was at launch. Whether that loss is coming from changes in the case design or internal components is not yet known, though — we’ll have to wait for a teardown to confirm that. However, last year’s CFI-1102 mode was lighter mostly due to a smaller heatsink.

The weight reduction could allow Sony to reduce production costs and possibly build consoles more quickly. Last week, Sony announced that it was raising PlayStation 5 pricing around the world but not in the US (€50 more than the original launch prices in Europe), due to “challenging economic conditions.” It said last year that it’s no longer selling the PS5 at a loss and was actually making money on the disc-based version.

Dell’s most popular gaming laptop gets a massive price cut

While gamers can get the best Alienware deals from Dell’s website to enjoy top-notch quality for prices that are cheaper than usual, Dell’s most popular gaming laptop is actually the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition. If you’re in the middle of a search for your next gaming companion, you’re in luck because you can get the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition for $369 off, which makes the gaming laptop more affordable at $1,100, compared to its normal price of $1,469. This clearance sale probably won’t last long, so there’s no time to waste if you want to avail it.

Why you should buy the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition gaming laptop

The Dell G15 Ryzen Edition gaming laptop showcases just how AMD continues to close the gap with its rival in the AMD vs. Intel debate. It’s equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H mobile processor and the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 graphics card, which are capable of running most of today’s top video games, and it’s got 16GB of RAM, which is enough for the vast majority of gamers, according to Digital Trends’ guide on how much RAM you need. Our laptop buying guide says gaming laptops should be able to keep up with the ever-increasing requirements of PC gaming, and the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition can certainly do that. The gaming laptop also comes with a 512GB SSD with Windows 11 Home out of the box, so you can start installing your favorite games as soon as it’s delivered to your doorstep.

Some gamers should also look at gaming monitor deals so that they can play on a bigger screen while at home with their gaming laptop, but that wouldn’t be necessary with the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition’s 15.6-inch Full HD display with a 165Hz refresh rate. Like the best gaming laptops, it’s capable of running for several hours without overheating thanks to a thermal system that utilizes copper piping and four large exhaust vents to dissipate heat.

If you’re looking for gaming laptop deals, you certainly can’t go wrong with Dell’s $369 discount for the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition. You’ll only have to pay $1,100 to get Dell’s most popular gaming laptop, instead of its original price of $1,469. However, we don’t expect the device’s stocks to last long in this clearance sale. If you think that the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition gaming laptop is perfect for your needs, then you shouldn’t hesitate to finalize the purchase — once the deal is gone, it may be gone for good.

Nvidia and AMD cut GPU orders to deal with crypto’s collapse

A new report shows that Nvidia, AMD, and Apple may all be trying to lower their chip orders from TSMC. This is a direct response to the lower demand for electronics we’ve been experiencing over the past few months (and the fall in GPU prices with crypto’s demise). Nvidia, in particular, is in a tough spot as it may not be able to reduce its orders.

If this proves to be true, it brings up a lot of things to consider. With AMD and Nvidia soon set to release the next generation of GPUs, will the lowered consumer interest result in a drop in prices, or will the potentially smaller supply simply mean there will be fewer next-gen graphics cards to buy?

From Shutterstock by Kiklas Kiklas/Shutterstock

The information comes from DigiTimes which cites its own anonymous industry sources. The report (translated by Twitter user RetiredEngineer) claims that AMD, Nvidia, and Apple, which are all TSMC clients, have tried to change their chip orders — but not all three have been successful.

Apple managed to cut down the initial shipment of iPhone 14 chips by around 10%. AMD, on the other hand, revised its orders for 7nm and 6nm wafers, reportedly lowering the amounts by around 20,000. This applies to shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 and in the first quarter of 2023. However, AMD hasn’t changed its order for 5nm wafers intended for PCs and servers.

Nvidia seems to be in a sticky spot compared to the other two tech giants. It made prepayments to TSMC to secure their 5nm wafers for the upcoming RTX 4000-series of graphics cards. Now, facing a drastic drop in consumer demand, Nvidia tried to alter its order — but according to DigiTimes, TSMC wouldn’t budge. The companies came to an agreement where the first shipments will be delayed by one quarter, but Nvidia is now supposed to find replacement customers for TSMC’s vacated production capacity. A year ago, that would have been easy, but now, it might be nearly impossible.

After many long months of the GPU shortage, graphics card prices are now falling rapidly, and retailers and manufacturers alike are left with a surplus of GPUs that no one wants to buy. The second-hand market is flooded with used GPUs that did their time mining crypto and are no longer profitable to keep running due to the crash in the cryptocurrency market.

It’s not just graphics cards that have suddenly become far less sought after. According to a forecast by Gartner, worldwide PC shipments are on track to decline by 9.5% in 2022. The personal computer market is experiencing the steepest decline of all other device segments that Gartner analyzes, but mobile devices (tablets and phones) are also seeing a drop in shipments. Consumer PC demand is suffering bigger losses than business PC demand, amounting to 13.1% and 7.2% in 2022 respectively.

Will this affect the pricing of next-gen graphics cards?

Fans on the Nvidia RTX 3080.
Jacob Roach / Digital Trends

Something many aspiring PC builders are wondering about is whether the current market situation will affect the pricing of Nvidia’s RTX 4000 graphics cards. Given that the company is currently experiencing a drop in demand and seems to predict that this downward trend is going to continue, it makes sense that it might also change the pricing of next-gen GPUs.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say with any certainty what Nvidia might do in this situation. A year ago, we were in the midst of a market where the demand was much higher than the supply. That is no longer the case, and unless the crypto market miraculously recovers, we won’t be coming back to that for quite a while. With the world economy in a shaky place and inflation on the rise, lowering the pricing might be the only thing that would kickstart GPU sales again.

Nvidia still hasn’t announced the pricing of its next-gen graphics cards — but looking at the current generation gives us a bit of an idea of what to expect. AMD’s best graphics cards are cheaper than Nvidia across the board, so Nvidia wasn’t striving to be competitive in that regard this time around. It also still hasn’t lowered the prices for all the surplus GPUs it has laying around, and with the looming launch of RTX 4000, it’s high time that Nvidia tries to sell those off.

One thing is for certain — we’re finally in a buyer’s market. Whether you buy a new GPU or hold off for a little while to see the next generation hit the shelves, it’s refreshing to no longer see graphics cards hitting 300% of MSRP and selling out in seconds.

This 34-inch 4K Monitor Got a HUGE Price Cut for Black Friday

Digital Trends may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.

If you’ve been considering an upgrade to your computer setup, Black Friday deals have your back. This Black Friday monitor deal at Walmart will take any desktop to the next level, whether it’s for work, video streaming, or gaming. Right now during Walmart Black Friday deals, you can snag this ultrawide Samsung monitor for only $279. That’s $121 off its usual price of $400. With major supply shortages affecting most tech products this year, we can’t be sure how long this deal will last.

Not everyone needs a super-wide screen like the one on this Samsung. At 34-inches diagonally, the screen measures 32.6 inches across and 18.53 inches high. This type of widescreen monitor will most naturally appeal to gamers (think about how wide you can set your field of vision in a first-person shooter), but many other people will find a use for it. Need more room for spreadsheets on your work computer? You can comfortably fit multiple open windows onto a screen this size. With a discount this steep, it’s certainly cheaper than buying two separate monitors with the same specs. It even includes picture-by-picture and picture-in-picture modes that allow you to display content from two different sources at once, such as a desktop and a laptop, or a PC and a console.

Speaking of specs, we don’t want the screen size to overshadow the display. This is a gorgeous 1440p monitor with a crystal-clear picture that has roughly 2.4 times the resolution of a full HD monitor. Gamers using AMD graphic cards can take advantage of the FreeSync tech, which synchronizes the refresh rate of the monitor to allow for the smoothest gameplay possible. There’s also a special low-input-lag mode.

This is a great deal on this Samsung ultrawide monitor for only $279, which is $121 off its regular price of $400. Head over to Walmart and grab it before it’s gone. Or check out some other gaming monitor deals if you want to compare its features with other options currently on sale.

We strive to help our readers find the best deals on quality products and services, and we choose what we cover carefully and independently. The prices, details, and availability of the products and deals in this post may be subject to change at anytime. Be sure to check that they are still in effect before making a purchase.
