Dell’s affordable G16 gaming laptop features a 12th-gen Intel CPU and NVIDIA RTX graphics

New Alienware laptops with optional 480Hz displays aren’t the only computers Dell announced today. The company also has a new option for those looking for something more affordable. The G16 represents the first 16-inch laptop for the company’s Dell Gaming brand. Dell went with a 16:10 panel that features a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, G-Sync compatibility and a modest 300 nits of peak brightness. 

No word on response rate or panel type, but the company notes the decision to go with a 16:10 aspect ratio allowed it to fit the G16’s display into a 15-inch chassis. As a result, the laptop has 11 percent more screen space than the G15.

Internally, the G16 comes with Intel’s 12th-generation Core i7 12700H processor. The 14-core, 20-thread chip features a maximum boost clock of 4.70GHz. Straight from the factory, Dell will let you configure the G16 with up to 16GB of 4,800MHz DDR5 RAM. You can add 16GB of RAM on your own to max out the laptop’s memory. Storage starts at 512GB via a Class 35 M.2 NVMe. You can configure the G16 with up to 2TB of total storage.

As for your video card options, you have three. The base model has an RTX 3050 Ti with 4GB of GDDR6 memory that can draw 90 watts of power. Alternatively, you can buy the G16 with either an RTX 3060 or 3070 Ti. The latter can pull up to 140W of power and features 8GB of GDDR6 memory, making it the most sensible option for a gaming laptop with a QHD display. Your GPU will also decide whether the G16 comes with a Thunderbolt 4 port. The connection is only available on models with an RTX 3060 or 3070 Ti. Otherwise, both variants come with HDMI 2.1, three USB-A connections, a headphone jack and an Ethernet port. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity are also standard across all variants. Powering everything is either a 56WHr or 86WHr battery.

You also have three options when it comes to G16’s typing experience. By default, the laptop comes with a one-zone RGB keyboard. You can upgrade to a model with per-key lighting, with the option to add CherryMX switches as well. The Dell G16 will start at $1,400 when it goes on sale on July 21st.

AMD says RX 7000 graphics cards are crazy powerful

AMD revealed several new details about its upcoming RX 7000 graphics cards during its Financial Analyst Day on Thursday. Chief among them are that RX 7000 graphics cards offer more than a 50% improvement in performance per watt over the previous generation, and that they’re coming later in 2022.

The greater-than-50% performance-per-watt mark is the same one AMD set for its RDNA 2 graphics cards, but the estimate could be conservative this time around. Recent rumors suggest that RX 7000 graphics cards could be up to 130% faster than the previous generation overall while staying relatively power efficient. If that’s the case, we could see AMD’s next-gen GPUs among the best graphics cards.


AMD didn’t go into that much detail during its financial presentation, so view rumored performance with skepticism. The company confirmed several details about the upcoming range, though. RX 7000 graphics cards will use a 5nm manufacturing process (rumors say Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs could use 4nm), and they’ll utilize a chiplet design.

This is one of the earliest rumors we heard about the RDNA 3 architecture featured on RX 7000 GPUs. The graphics cards could use a multichip module (MCM), which means AMD can combine multiple dies on the same chip. We’ve already seen MCM from the upcoming Ryzen 7000 processors, which uses a 5nm compute die and 6nm I/O die.

AMD also confirmed that it’s working on RDNA 4 graphics cards, which could launch around late 2023 or early 2024 (the road map is vague on the exact release window). The company didn’t share details about the manufacturing process, only saying “advanced node” in its road map instead. The company confirmed that Zen 5 processors will use 4nm and 3nm nodes, however. Given that we expect RDNA 4 graphics cards to line up with Zen 5, we expect 4nm or 3nm, but AMD hasn’t confirmed those details yet.

It’s tough to say when RX 7000 graphics cards will launch, but we expect them between November and December (that’s when RX 6000 GPUs launched two years ago). Recent rumors suggest that even entry-level RX 7000 GPUs can outperform flagship models from the previous generation, and that they won’t be power hogs.

That’s a big concern going into the next generation of GPUs. Nvidia’s RTX 40-series cards are rumored to have massive power requirements — as much as 600 watts on the flagship model. We haven’t heard anything official yet, but if the rumors are true, AMD could have a major leg up when it comes to efficiency. One leaker, at least, says that AMD will “decimate” Nvidia in power efficiency.

The flagship RX 7000 graphics card is also rumored to be the first GPU with PCIe 5.0 support, which makes sense given AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7000 CPUs. The Ryzen 7000 platform supports PCIe 5.0, so it would make sense for AMD’s next-gen GPUs to, as well. For now, we’re looking forward to the fall. If the cards are on track to launch later this year, we expect to see them in action in the back half of 2022.

Intel Arc Alchemist A380 Discrete Graphics Card: Specs Leak

Intel’s upcoming discrete GPUs, dubbed Intel Arc Alchemist, are coming next year, and some new leaks reveal what kind of performance we can expect from them.

According to the leak, one of the upcoming GPUs, the A380, is likely to offer performance similar to that of Nvidia’s GTX 1650 Super, an entry-level video card from Nvidia’s previous generation of graphics.

The information comes from TUM_APISAK on Twitter, a well-known source for graphics card-related rumors and leaks. The tweet in question talks about some of the specifications of the upcoming Intel Arc A380 graphics card and reveals the expected naming convention Intel might use. It seems that Intel is going to name the new cards A***, with the numbers changing to correspond to the performance tier of that specific card.

What we’re seeing in TUM_APISAK’s reveal is most likely the desktop variant of this graphics card. In terms of specifications, the A380 is said to be based on an Alchemist (XE-HPG DG2) GPU. It will be fabricated on the TSMC 6nm process node. Its 8 Xe cores will house 128 execution units (EUs). The top model of this lineup will allegedly have 512 EUs and 32 Xe cores.

The card is also rumored to have an impressive clock speed of 2.45GHz. Whether this frequency will be the boost clock or the base clock remains to be seen, but such speeds put the A380 within range of AMD Navi 22 and Navi 23 graphics cards. In addition, the card will have 6GB of GDDR6 memory. It has also been said that all Arc Alchemist cards will come with ray-tracing and the XeSS feature set, a form of image upscaling on Intel cards.

There was no mention of the bus, but previous leaks suggest a 96-bit interface. In the desktop version of the card, we can expect to see 16Gbps pin speeds, adding up to 168GB/s of bandwidth. The laptop version is said to be slightly worse, with 14Gbps pin speeds and 168GB/s bandwidth. Intel Arc Alchemist A380 is likely going to be fairly conservative with poweer, with a TDP of 75W.

TUM_APISAK hasn’t provided any benchmarks, but he did suggest that the performance of this card is going to rival that of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super. While that is a rather dated card by now, it continues to be one of the best budget graphics cards out there. This bodes well for the Arc Alchemist.

The pricing of the card hasn’t yet been revealed, but the launch is still a few months away. Remember, its performance and specifications may not be accurate right now. If the leaks prove to be true, this card is likely to be rather inexpensive, with a price of around $250 or less.

Graphics Card Sales Drop By Almost 20% Quarter-To-Quarter

Although many desktop users all over the globe are still hunting for one of the best graphics cards, market analysis shows a large drop in GPU sales.

According to Jon Peddie Research, a firm that specializes in tech industry analysis, graphics card sales dropped by 18.2% compared to the previous quarter. On the other hand, comparing sales to the previous year still shows massive growth that speaks volumes about current demand.


The statistics apply to PC-based graphics cards. Over 101 million GPUs have been shipped as of the third quarter of 2021. Those are massive numbers, especially when taking the ongoing graphics card shortage into consideration. These sales mark a 12% year-over-year growth, continuing the upward trend affecting most of the PC market.

While yearly sales have gone up, quarterly results took a huge dive. Compared to the second quarter of 2021, GPU shipments dropped by 18.2% in the third quarter of this year. This quarter used to be the strongest in terms of hardware sales, but all of the previous statistics have been thrown out the window due to various supply chain issues, shortages, and of course, the ongoing pandemic. Even accounting for the current situation in the world, a drop of 18.2% is massive and far above the 10-year average of -5.2%.

The GPU market continues to be a two-horse race between Nvidia and AMD. Intel is gearing up to join the battle with its upcoming Intel Arc Alchemist line, but until then, the manufacturer has almost no market share when it comes to discrete graphics cards. As such, all of these numbers apply almost oolely to Nvidia and AMD.

Jon Peddie Research reports that over the last quarter, AMD and Nvidia both maintained the same market share that they held in the second quarter: Nvidia holds 83% of GPU sales, and the rest belongs to AMD. However, year-over-year, Nvidia increased its lead by 3%, leaving AMD further behind.

The above applies to discrete GPUs, but Intel does play a part in the overall GPU attach rate. Overall GPU attach rate includes both integrated and discrete units, desktop GPUs, laptop models, and those installed in workstations. Jon Peddie Research reported that the attach rate for the last quarter was 125%, which is a 7.6% increase compared to the second quarter of 2021. Despite the overall increase in sales, only Nvidia managed to grow its market share in this section by 8%. AMD saw a decline of 11.4%, but that’s still not too bad when compared to Intel’s -25.6% drop.

The huge dip in quarter-to-quarter sales is not as surprising as it might seem. The chip shortage is not getting any better: Getting a graphics card at MSRP is a small miracle. As prices reach outrageous levels, many opt to not buy a GPU or choose to buy a used unit. Throw into that various supply chain issues and limited availability of graphics cards, and all of it adds up to a bad quarter for sales.

Recent rumors reveal that AMD may be working on new budget graphics cards. Nvidia is readying RTX 4000-Series GPUs for next year, and Intel has its Arc Alchemist line in the works. Perhaps the new releases will help GPU sales rebound, but the GPU shortage itself is likely to persist throughout 2022.

Amazon’s New World Reportedly Bricking Graphics Cards

Players reported that Amazon’s massively multiplayer game New World is bricking their gaming PCs. The issue seems to be tied to EVGA RTX 3090 graphics cards, according to users who have experienced the problem. However, even players that are using just an RTX 3090 have reported that their computers are overheating and consuming an enormous amount of CPU power.

When someone refers to “bricking” a device, they could be using it in one of two ways. Many people use the term “bricking” when a device can no longer function at the moment or crashes when trying to perform a task or run an application. Usually, with this definition, the user will need to reboot the device. The true definition of “bricking” is when a device is completely destroyed and becomes no longer usable. Unfortunately, it seems that the latter is happening more in terms of the New World beta players.

Players report that their graphics cards are bricking even when they are in the menus of the game. Even if New World does not destroy the graphics card, players claim that it is overheating their computers in extreme ways. There have been reports that New World overheats computers more than other graphic intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3.

How to Buy a Graphics Card in 2021 (At a Reasonable Price)

The best graphics cards have been almost impossible to find for nearly a year, but things are starting to improve. Stock is improving at retailers, and although prices are still high, they’re starting to drop. For everyone who has been patiently waiting — and doesn’t want to wait anymore –we’re going to show you how to buy a graphics card.

It is important to note that prices are still much higher than they should be, and that’s true across retailers. We have three methods that will help you score a card as close to list price as possible, but it’s next to impossible at the moment to buy a card at list price.

Method 1: Newegg, EVGA, and Micro Center

If you want to score a new graphics card as close to list price as possible, there are three options: Newegg Shuffle, EVGA’s queue system, and in-store at Micro Center. It’s possible to get a graphics card through all three methods, but your mileage will vary based on where you’re located, how much money you’re willing to spend, and how diligent you are with finding a new card.

Newegg Shuffle is probably the most popular way to get a new graphics card. Shuffle is a raffle that runs every day on Newegg’s website. Each day, Newegg selects a list of high-demand products — mostly graphics cards, but occasionally processors and consoles, too — that users can select for a chance to purchase. After the raffle closes, Newegg draws winners and gives them a small window of time to log in and check out.

It isn’t a perfect system, though. On average, around 100,000 people enter each shuffle, so you could enter every day for months and still not get selected. It’s a raffle, after all, so there’s an element of luck. In addition, Newegg often bundles cards with other components that you may not need, like a power supply or a motherboard. You can’t return the bundled item separately, so you’ll either need to sell it yourself or eat the extra cost.

The EVGA queue system is more forgiving. Instead of a raffle, EVGA allows users to purchase cards on a first-come, first-served basis as stock becomes available. Unlike Newegg Shuffle and the many other methods of purchasing a graphics card, EVGA sells its cards at list price. Yes, you can purchase an RTX 3080 for $699.

However, it’s entirely dependent on when EVGA has new stock available. Instead of an overall raffle, you have to choose each individual model you want to purchase and be ready to buy when your name comes up.

Finally, you can purchase a card in person if you have a Micro Center close to you. Many locations have graphics cards in stock for multiple days, and if your local store doesn’t, you can show up in the morning when they get more inventory to nab a card. This is probably the best way to get a new graphics card for a reasonable price, but that assumes you have a Micro Center close to you.

Method 2: Use a stock tracker

If you want to white-knuckle your way to a new graphics card, you can use a stock tracker. There are several stock trackers available through YouTube live streams, Discord servers, and browser extensions, but they all do the same thing: Constantly check if graphics cards are in stock across retailers.

User fixitfixitfixit has been running a live stream across YouTube and Twitch for the past several months, and there’s a Discord server attached to the streams, as well. It tracks inventory for AMD and Nvidia graphics cards across Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, and Antonline, as well as several other retailers (including Office Depot and B&H Photo).

In addition, there are stock-tracking extensions like Distill and HotStock that can check for you. Both have free and paid tiers depending on how often you want to check websites and how many products you want to monitor. It’s possible that retailers will ban you for using these tools, though. Users report accounts being shut down on Newegg and Best Buy thanks to the anti-bot measures in place at those retailers.

If you want to use this method, we’d recommend following a stock-tracking account on Twitter. That way, you don’t need to constantly monitor a live stream or run the risk of having your account banned. Accounts like @stock_drops and @LeBlarstOfTimes tweet out when new cards become available. Follow these accounts and similar ones, and make sure to turn on tweet notifications. If you do that, you’ll only need to check when you get a notification.

Method 3: Buy a pre-built or a gaming laptop

If you need more than a graphics card, or even a full system, you’re in luck. You can pick up a pre-built system or a gaming laptop at a reasonable price. Keep in mind that pre-built systems are more expensive than buying components individually, so the final price is reflective of the high cost of graphics cards right now.

There are numerous options for pre-built desktops. HP, Dell, Origin PC, and Falcon Northwest top the list of the best gaming desktops, but there are dozens of builders with a slew of unique options. The benefit of going with a pre-built PC is that you can customize your build beyond what you might be comfortable doing. There are options like the HP Omen 30L that include off-the-shelf parts that are easily upgradeable, as well as machines like the Maingear Rush, which includes a custom water-cooling loop.

The other benefit of a pre-built is that you can pick the card you want. Newegg Shuffle mainly features Nvidia cards, and EVGA exclusively sells Nvidia cards. With a pre-built, you can pick up one of AMD’s recent RDNA 2 graphics cards, too.

If you don’t need the extra parts, you can buy a pre-built, swap out the graphics card, and resell it as a unit. You can also part it out and sell everything individually. Although it’s a hassle to get rid of the extra parts if you only need a graphics card, going this route can save you some money depending on how your system is configured.

The other option is a gaming laptop. The GPU pricing crisis has only really impacted full-size graphics cards. Popular gaming laptops with recent mobile cards, like the Razer Blade 14, are still priced in accordance with the rest of the laptop market. The obvious downside of this route is that you can’t pull out the graphics card and put it in another machine, as well as the normal heat and noise issues that come with most gaming laptops.

Method 4: Buy secondhand (but be careful)

Finally, you can buy a card secondhand. This is a good option if you want to score a card below the price at retailers, especially as scalpers level off and secondhand prices continue to drop. You have to be careful when shopping on the secondhand market, though.

Cryptocurrency miners often sell off their GPUs after they’ve been used for mining. Since they’re cards that are operating at full capacity for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you might be picking up a unit that’s on its last leg. There’s no way of knowing if you’re buying from a miner or not, so you’ll have to do your secondhand due diligence. If you look at ratings and other listings the seller has, it’s usually easy to deduce if they’re a builder selling off an old GPU or a miner offloading dozens of cards.

eBay is the best place to gauge what price GPUs are selling for, but you’ll find them on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Mercari, too. Regardless of the platform, pay careful attention to the listing name and description. Since the start of the GPU shortage, sellers have popped up selling pictures of graphics cards, not the cards themselves. Although mostly just a joke, it’s not hard imagining someone buying something like this thinking they’re scoring a good deal on a graphics card.

Are Nvidia and AMD Graphics Cards Dropping In Price?

PC builders all over the globe have had a rough year due to the graphics cards shortage. The prices of Nvidia and AMD GPUs have gone through the roof, and there seemed to be no end in sight. However, signs of improvement started showing up a few weeks ago, and there are now solid figures to back them up as GPU prices in Germany have dropped drastically.

Although the demand for the best graphics cards continues to be high, German retailers have already started lowering the prices to a slightly more reasonable level. The drop in pricing is noticeable and it took place over a short period of time, giving PC enthusiasts some hope for the future.

Website compiled the figures taken directly from the German market, starting in mid-May until now, and the results are promising. In mid-May, German retailers sold the latest Nvidia and AMD GPUs at about 304% of their MSRP — which is, to put it mildly, ridiculously overpriced. In just a month and a half, the prices dropped from 304% to 153% of MSRP. While that is still much higher than most people are prepared to pay, a downward trend is always a good sign.

Based on the figures provided by 3DCenter, it seems that the prices of Nvidia GPUs are dropping quicker than those of AMD cards. This might be due to the fact that Nvidia’s RX 30-series cards have historically hit higher price peaks than AMD’s Radeon RX 6000-series cards.

A look at average GPU prices in May gives solid evidence as to the drop in pricing. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070 costs about 799 to 1,490 euros right now, whereas on May 16, it was priced at 1,498 to 1,649 euros. At launch, the card cost just 519 euros. As for AMD, German stores offer the Radeon RX 6800 XT for anywhere between 1,089 and 1,499 euros. The MSRP of that card is 649. euros However, the RX 6800 XT is even trickier to find for sale than Nvidia cards.

While the news from Germany is promising, the prices on the U.S. market are still high. As an example, Amazon offers Gigabyte’s GeForce RTX 3070 OC Edition for $1,349 compared to its MSRP of $749. Meanwhile, AMD’s Sapphire VCX Radeon RX 6700 XT Gaming OC sells for $1,058 on Amazon and $1,015 on Newegg.

There are a number of reasons why we might continue seeing improvements in the state of the GPU market. As both AMD and Nvidia are making attempts to optimize their supply chain, there has been a rise in graphics cards supplies in recent weeks. Although new releases still sell out almost immediately, you can now find some GPUs from legit sources as opposed to buying them from scalpers. Needless to say, the cards are still overpriced.

Reports say that the demand for the latest graphics cards might be dropping and that GPU supply quantities are slowly normalizing. The lower demand is affected by both the situation in China, where the government is trying to curb cryptocurrency mining, and the crypto market itself, which is currently going through a lull. It helps that Nvidia’s latest releases, the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 3070 Ti, both include Lite Hash Rate limiters that make them less attractive for mining crypto.

We are still a long way away from how things used to be. Finding a new GPU at a reasonable price continues to be a difficult task. However, more and more signs point to the situation steadily getting better. If the downward trend continues in our favor, we might be seeing further improvements within the next few months.

This graphics card-like SSD comes with 32TB of storage

Gigabyte has unveiled a new SSD that it says is “the highest-performance storage device among all consumer SSDs in the market.” The Aorus Xtreme Gen4 SSD is an add-in card (AIC) that boasts 32TB of storage and a transfer speed of 28GB/s — only 4GB/s less than the maximum bandwidth of the PCIe 4.0 interface.

The drive features eight 4TB NVMe SSDs, providing a total of 32TB of storage. Configured in RAID 0, the SSDs split the workload of reading and writing data between them, which boosts the transfer speed up to four times beyond Gigabyte’s own Aorus Gen4 7000s SSDs. Users can enable a RAID 0 configuration with a single click through the Gigabyte SSD Tool Box, providing sequential read speeds of up to 28GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 26.6GB/s.

All of that performance produces heat, so Gigabyte outfitted the card with a dual-fan configuration reminiscent of a graphics card. The fans sit on top of a large aluminum heat sink, beefing up the card to occupy the space of a full-length, full-height AIC. The fans run based off data pulled from 10 temperature sensors on the card, which you can monitor through the SSD Tool Box.

Don’t get you wallet oit just yet, though. The Aorus Extreme Gen4 SSD requires a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot to reach its maximum speed, which, combined with a graphics card that also uses a PCIe x16 slot, will go beyond the available PCIe lanes on consumer processors.

AMD’s Ryzen 5000 processors only come with 24 PCIe lanes, for example, while the high-end Threadripper chips come with 128. Although you can technically use the card with Intel 11th-gen and AMD Ryzen 5000 processors, you’ll need a Threadripper or Xeon CPU (particularly the most recent series) to use it with anything else that uses PCIe lanes.

That’s not surprising in the space of high-end computing, though. Gigabyte hasn’t released pricing details for the Aorus Extreme Gen4 SSD, but it will likely sell for several thousand dollars.

Although we doubt it will be an issue, the Aorus Extreme Gen4 SSD is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0, so you can use it on older chipsets. Keep in mind that it’s designed for PCIe 4.0, so you’ll severely limit the performance with a PCIe 3.0 connection.
