How To Use the Windows 11 Snap Groups Feature

Windows 11 brings many new features to play with, and one of those is known as Snap Groups. Though you’ve already been multitasking in Windows 10 with the ability to “snap” windows to various places on your screen, Windows 11 takes that feature to the next level.

Snap Groups are actually the groups that are saved when you create a layout via the Snap layouts feature in Windows 11. If you’re wondering how that works, then we’ve got you covered with our Windows 11 guide on how to use Snap Groups.

Step 1: Create a Snap layout

Before jumping into creating a Snap Group, you need to first create a Snap layout to multitask with. You can do this in a few simple steps. To begin, a Snap layout can be created by first opening up all the programs you want to multitask with.

Once you have all the programs open, pull one to the front of the screen, and hover your mouse over the Maximize button (the second from the left on the top-right of your screen.) You’ll then see one of six ways to tile and “snap” your open windows.

You can tile two Windows side by size at an even length, side by side with one side bigger, straight down the middle in a vertical column, straight down the middle with the middle one being bigger, and more. You even can group the windows in a four-square grid.

After hitting the Snap Layout button, just click on one program. Windows will suggest ways for you to tile the other programs in to fill the Snap Layout shortly after. You can then keep working with your open windows now neatly organized.

Step 2: Check the taskbar for Snap Groups

Once you create a Snap layout in Windows 11, you can head down to your Taskbar. Hover the mouse over your Taskbar to see the newly created Snap Group. The group should be clearly labeled, and you’ll see a preview of the group in the same layout you just created. You can minimize and get access to the group all at once without having to control each window individually, as it was in Windows 10. It also helps keep the bottom of the screen clean by combining your windows.

What to do if you don’t see Snap layouts or Snap Groups

Snap layouts and Snap Groups should be turned on by default in Windows 11. If you’re not seeing the feature, then there is the chance the setting might be disabled. You can re-enable it very easily. Open Windows 11 Settings, and then click on System. From there, click Multitasking. Make sure the toggle switch for Snap Windows is on. Then, click the Down Arrow next to the switch and make sure all the other boxes are checked. You can now enjoy multitasking in Windows 11 and get the most out of your PC — and your day at work or school!

How to Use the Tab Groups Feature in Safari

With MacOS Monterey, Apple has updated Safari’s tab management system with a new look, more customization options, and the ability to form tab groups for managing especially busy online sessions.

We’re big fans of these changes, as they make work and research easier to manage over the long term, but the extra features will take some practice to get comfortable using. Here’s how to get started with tab groups so you can make the most of them.

Step 1: Open Safari and collect the sites you want to save

Safari’s tab bar gets a redesign, and it now takes on the colors of the active tab.

First, make sure everything is updated and you are using the latest version of Safari. When ready, open Safari and start opening new tabs to visit the websites you want to collect in a group. If you are doing research on Einstein, for example, you would want to collect a number of tabs including biographies, common Einstein myths, a list of his major theories and works, and so on.

Don’t leave any blank tabs when you are finished. There doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many tabs you can put in a group, but at a certain point, too many browser tabs can become cumbersome — you may want to keep it under 20 or so.

Step 2: Turn your tabs into a tab group

When ready, select File from Safari’s upper-left menu, then look for the option that says New Tab Group With X Tabs, where X is the number of tabs you currently have open. Select it.

Now you can name your tab — something like “Einstein,” for example — and it will automatically be saved. Any work you do in this Safari window will still count as the tab group, and the group will be updated accordingly. Close your Safari window to save your tab group for later.

When you want to access the tab group again, pop open Safari and select the Sidebar icon, just to the left of the Favorites menu. This drop-down menu will include all the groups you have created under Tab Groups. When you select the group you want, Safari will open all tabs in a single window for you to use and change Favorites to the name of your tab group. Note the Small Grid icon to the right when you hover over a tab group — this opens up all tabs in a grid view that makes it easier to scan for the webpage you had in mind.

Alternative: Create a new tab group from scratch

You don’t have to collect your tabs first before turning them into a tab group. If you prefer to set up and name your tab group ahead of time, this is easy to do as well.

Open Safari, select File in the upper-left corner, and select New Empty Tab Group. Now, any tabs that you create while you work will be automatically added to the tab group you have made.

Step 3: Rename or delete your tabs

Don’t let your tab groups get cluttered over time! Instead, reuse them by renaming them, or delete them when you are finished with that particular project or plan. Open Safari, then select the Sidebar icon right next to the Favorites menu. Hover over the Tab Group, then right-click to open a menu with several choices. Here, you will see an option to Rename the group or to Delete it entirely when you are finished. Keep these options handy when your tab groups start to pile up.

Step 4: Share tab groups as needed

In the Sidebar menu, when you right-click on a Tab Group, you’ll notice another option that says Copy Links. Choose this, and it will allow you to paste an outline-like section with the tab group as the title and a bulleted list of the web links. This makes it easy to share or email the tab group to others as needed.

We’ve been talking about the MacOS version of tab groups, but there’s good news: With iOS 15 updates, iPhones and iPads will get very similar capabilities. Safari’s syncing capabilities will also stay in place, allowing you to access tabs you created on your Mac on other devices.

If you want to create tab groups on iOS, long-press the Tab button on Safari and select the arrow under Tabs to open the option for Tab Groups.

New Microsoft Edge Features Coming Soon Include Tab Groups

Microsoft Edge, the company’s signature browser, has been receiving updates throughout the year — and there is more to come. The current feature road map for Edge reveals that some interesting changes to the browser are coming soon. While there are also some smaller updates in development, the two standouts include tab groups and Video Picture in Picture (PiP).

The road map presented by Microsoft covers a timeline from late last year through September 2021 and includes over 70 changes to Microsoft Edge. A lot of these changes have already been implemented, such as the addition of the date of birth to autofill or the ability to bulk-delete passwords. However, Microsoft’s plans for the rest of the year are slightly more interesting than the minor quality of life changes we’ve received thus far.

One change that many Edge users may have been looking forward to is tab grouping. Already present in Google Chrome, tab groups allow users to organize browser tabs. Edge users will be able to categorize them according to user-defined groups. The tabs will then show up in separate sections and will be easy to distinguish from other groups of tabs. It will also be possible to move tabs within their designated groups in order to organize them. This change is going to be added with version 93 of Microsoft Edge, which according to Microsoft should be released this month.

The next feature of note is related to the Video Picture in Picture (PiP) function. This feature is already available in Chrome via an extension. While PiP has already been a part of Edge for some time, finding and using it wasn’t a very intuitive process. Microsoft is bringing improvements that might make it more widely used.

Video Picture in Picture allows users to watch videos in a floating window in the corner of their screen. The video can be interacted with at any time in order to maximize the window, pause the video, and more. The small video preview can also be moved around the screen, and even off-screen. In Edge, accessing this feature used to be a bit of a chore. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 93, PiP will be accessible from a hover toolbar. Simply hovering over an active video will allow users to watch it in PiP mode. This improvement is still in development and is set to launch in September.

Other features that are coming to Edge soon include automatic translation for unknown languages, improved family safety measures, and price history on Amazon Prime as well as nine other retailers. According to Microsoft, we can expect to see all of these in September or later.

As Microsoft recently announced the sunsetting date of Internet Explorer, the new, Chromium-based Edge is its main browser. It’s likely that the company will keep updating Edge in order to try to compete with other major browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox, but also to match the productivity-oriented Windows 11, set to release sometime this year.

Facebook Gaming rolls out Fan Groups to help streamers and fans stay connected

Facebook is rolling out a new type of group, but only for Gaming creators for now. Streamers can take advantage of several new features in Fan Groups. Among them is a way to organize topics into threaded discussions. Those can be moved into chat channels (similar to channels in a Discord or Slack server). Any badges a viewer earns during a stream will be available in the Fan Group, so they can show others that they’re an engaged member of the community. 

There’s a new type of post called Looking for Players. The idea is to help users find people to play games with from within a streamer’s community, so it’s a looking for group feature. You can state how many people you’re looking to team up with and you’ll see a waitlist when all the spots are full.

Elsewhere, Facebook says it has improved Fan Group discovery, with the idea of helping streamers build their communities and fans to stay connected. When a streamer stops broadcasting, viewers will see a suggestion to join their Fan Group. People who engage with the creator’s page will also be informed about the Fan Group.

This is another move from Facebook to make Gaming a more attractive option for streamers than the likes of Twitch or YouTube. Facebook has billions of users that streamers can tap into in order to build their communities. Fan Groups should help streamers and fans stay connected outside of livestreams — meaning they can keep the conversation on Facebook, instead of moving to a separate platform such as Discord. Additionally, the company recently said it won’t take a cut of creators’ earnings until 2023.

Fan Groups are now available to partnered Facebook Gaming creators. Level Up creators will gain access in the coming weeks.

AI diversity groups snub future funding from Google over staff treatment

Google’s AI ethics drama has taken another twist. Three groups working to promote diversity in AI say they will no longer accept funding from the search giant after a series of controversial firings at the company.

Queer in AI, Black in AI, and Widening NLP cited the dismissals of Timnit Gebru and Margaret, the former co-leads of Google’s Ethical AI team, as well as recruiter April Christina Curley, as reasons for the decision.

Ia joint statement issued on Monday, the groups said Google’s actions had “inflicted tremendous harm” and “set a dangerous precedent for what type of research, advocacy, and retaliation is permissible in our community.”

Until Google addresses the harm they’ve caused by undermining both inclusion and critical research, we are unable to reconcile Google’s actions with our organizational missions.We have therefore decided to end our sponsorship relationship with Google.

Gebru was sacked in December after a conflict over a research paper she co-authored about the dangers of large language models, which are crucial components of Google’s search products.

Mitchell was fired three months later for reportedly using automated scripts to find emails showing mistreatment of Gebru, while Curley says she was terminated because the company was “tired of hearing me call them out on their racist bullshit.”

The three groups said Gebru and Mitchell’s exits had disrupted their lives and work, and also stymied the efforts of their former team. Curley’s departure, meanwhile, was described as “a step backward in recruiting and creating inclusive workplaces for Black engineers in an industry where BIPOC are marginalized and undermined.”

The groups urged Google to make the changes necessary to promote research integrity and transparency, as well as allow research that is critical of the company’s products.

They also called for the tech giant “to emphasize work that uplifts and hires diverse voices, honors ethical principles, and respects Indigenous and minority communities’ data and sovereignty.”

None of the organizations have previously rejected funding from a corporate sponsor. Wired reports that Queer in AI received $20,000 from Google in the past year, while Widening NLP got $15,000.

The trio joins a growing number of individuals and organizations who have spurned funding from Google over the company’s treatment of staff.

Five months after Gebru’s firing, the fallout continues to harm Google’s reputation for AI research.

MIT CSAIL claims its breast cancer prediction AI works equally well across demographic groups

Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) say they’ve created a breast cancer risk-assessment algorithm that shows consistent performance across patients from the U.S., Europe, and Asia. This new algorithm captures the requirements of risk modeling, jointly learning a patient’s risk across multiple future time points and optionally drawing on clinical risk factors like age and family history.

Breast cancer affects more than 2 million women each year, with around one in eight women in the U.S. developing the disease over the course of their lifetime. In 2018 in the U.S. alone, there were also 2,550 new cases of breast cancer in men. And rates of breast cancer are increasing in nearly every region around the world.

The CSAIL team’s algorithm, Mirai, which is also designed to produce predictions consistent across clinical environments, like the choice of mammography machine, was trained on a dataset of over 200,000 exams from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). A mammogram image is put through an encoder, which creates an image representation labeled with which view the image came from. Mirai aggregates representations of other images from other views to obtain a representation from the entire mammogram. With the mammogram, a patient’s traditional risk factors are predicted using what’s called a Tyrer-Cuzick model, which accounts for age, weight, and hormonal factors if available. With this information, Mirai predicts a patient’s risk for each year over the next five years.

Mirai was designed to predict risk at all time points simultaneously via a tool called an “additive-hazard layer.” This layer anticipates a patient’s risk at a time point, like five years, as an extension of their risk at the previous time point (e.g., four years). Doing so allows the model to learn from data with variable amounts of follow-up.

To benefit from risk factors without requiring them, Mirai predicts that information at training time, and if it’s not there, it uses its own predictive version. Mammograms are rich sources of health information, and many factors including age and menopausal status can be predicted from imaging. As a result of this design, the same model can be used by any clinic globally, the researchers say.

Partly due to a reticence to release code, datasets, and techniques, much of the data used today to train AI algorithms for diagnosing diseases might perpetuate inequalities. To debias Mirai, the CSAIL team used an adversarial scheme where the model learned mammogram representations invariant to the source clinical environment, which helped it to produce accurate predictions.

According to the researchers, Mirai was “significantly” more accurate than prior methods — including a two-year-old method by a team of scientists from CSAIL and MIT’s Jameel Clinic — in predicting risk and identifying high-risk groups across test datasets from MGH, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. When comparing high-risk cohorts on the MGH test set, the team found that their model identified nearly two times more future cancer diagnoses compared to the current clinical standard. Mirai was similarly accurate across patients of different races, age groups, and breast density categories in the MGH test set and with different cancer subtypes in the Karolinska test set.

Mirai is now installed at MGH, and the team says their collaborators are actively working on integrating the model into point-of-care.

Although Mirai doesn’t currently look at any of the patient’s previous imaging results, the team notes that changes in imaging over time contain a wealth of information. In the future, they aim to create methods that can effectively leverage a patient’s full imaging history.
