‘Fortnite’ Chapter 3 officially debuts with a new island and revamped gameplay

It didn’t take long for Epic to confirm Fortnite Chapter 3 details. The developer has officially released a trailer that outlines what to expect both in Chapter 3 and its first season, “Flipped.” The new island is the star, with the flip from the Chapter 2 finale leading to a complete landscape overhaul that includes chaotic weather. However, the gameplay changes are arguably more important — you’ll have to rethink your tactics.

The sliding and swinging mechanics should help you move (and dodge) faster than before. Camps help your squad heal and store items that persist between matches. You can also earn XP beyond battle royale, and hold on to a Victory Crown if you keep winning. Epic is clearly hoping to both foster a non-combat metaverse and keep its top-tier players coming back.

And yes, there are new characters. Spider-Man is well-suited to the new swinging mechanic, but you can also play as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Fortnite character The Foundation, or Gears of War‘s Marcus and Kait. Think of them as the poster children for Chapter 3. They may help draw you in, but it’s the fresh gameplay that might keep you playing in the long run.

Fortnite’s next Star Wars crossover brings Boba Fett to the island

Epic Games has announced another Fortnite crossover with the Star Wars universe. This time around, the company is adding Boba Fett to the battle royale island, a new offering made to promote the Disney+ streaming service. Disney plans to new Star Wars spin-off original show The Book of Boba Fett in late December.

The Book of Boba Fett is a series for Disney+ that’ll expand the Star Wars universe, joining other originals like The Mandalorian and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show. The new Fortnite Boba Fett crossover, which brings the character to the battle royale game, appears to be a promotion for the show’s launch.

Disney+ will premiere its The Book of Boba Fett series on December 29, while Epic’s Fortnite Boba Fett outfit will be available to players starting on December 24. Epic hasn’t provided any additional details on this planned launch, however, including how long it will be in the game’s Item Shop and how much it will cost.

This isn’t the first time the Star Wars universe has collided with Epic’s hit battle royale game, though we’re yet to get anything as big as the December 2019 – January 2020 Star Wars event. During that time, Epic made multiple Star Wars skins available in the game, as well as lightsabers and other items from the science fiction universe.

Smaller character-based crossovers have become a common sight in Fortnite, as well as other tie-in promotions for then-upcoming movies, games, TV shows, and more. Epic has added skins, buildings, and more from universes like Marvel, Stranger Things, Batman, and even subtle elements like red balloons to promote the movie IT.

Official Fortnite tweets tease massive island change may arrive this week

The latest and arguably greatest season of Fortnite Chapter 2 may experience some big changes in a future update expected to arrive this week. Rather than unofficial details from data-miners, Epic has teased the changes in a series of tweets — but it’s easy to miss them if you don’t know where to look.

Epic operates multiple Fortnite Twitter accounts, the most notable being the main English-language @FortniteGame account. That same account recently dropped a “Hot Saucer Leak” indicating that alien troops may soon appear on the island in a big way (below).

That’s the only teaser about whatever is coming if you look at the English-language account. However, fans have noticed that other Fortnite social media accounts, including the ones for Russia and the Middle East, have also shared their own teasers with additional details.

For example, the FortniteME account tweeted a similar message, noting that an intercepted call confirms alien ground forces are moving across the island starting from the west. “All island residents should take the utmost precautionary measures,” the tweet warns.

Notably, the FortniteME tweet includes an image of what appears to be an old crashed UFO in a large underground space, perhaps a cave. Two island agents dressed like shady government officials are visible overlooking the object. Epic doesn’t state what the alien ground troops are marching toward, but the image may tease the season’s wider storyline: perhaps a UFO had crashed on the island and the aliens arrived to retrieve it.

Meanwhile, the Spanish-language Fortnite Twitter account also shared the same message, but with an image of a crop circle.

Though the crop circle image isn’t anything new — Epic used crop circles as a pre-Season 7 teaser — the image shared on the FortniteME account is new. It’s unclear whether the account was supposed to include that particular image, but regardless it indicates an entirely new POI that may arrive next week.

Some fans speculate the crop circle image could also indicate either a new POI or a big change to an existing destination. The reason is that though Epic has previously used crop circles as promotional imagery for this season, the large field of green crops where it is located doesn’t appear to be anywhere currently on the battle royale island.

It’s difficult to say whether the image is meant to represent an actual POI or if the large corn field was simply used to showcase a crop circle as a generic photo related to the season’s theme. Epic hasn’t yet announced when the next game update will drop, but one is expected to arrive Tuesday — and assuming new POIs are coming, the patch is likely to be huge.

LucasArts legacy lives on in Prime Gaming push: Sam & Max, Secret of Monkey Island

Amazon heralded a return to some of the most beloved cult-classic video games ever made by LucasArts this summer in Prime Gaming. If you are an Amazon Prime member, you’ll be able to “claim” a few games with Prime Gaming starting on July 1, then again on August 1 and September 1. The games are each LucasArts classic titles, each of them “iconic point-and-click adventures.”

The July 1 release is The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. There’ll be an August 1, 2021 release on Prime Gaming for claim of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. If you’re still a Prime member on September 1, you’ll be able to claim Sam & Max: Hit The Road.

Much like other recently popular game stores giving away free games, you need to have the Prime Gaming app in order to play the games you “own.” You can claim The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition now for free, but you need to both have the app and an active Amazon Prime membership in order to play the game.

Amazon Prime Gaming also has a few other “free” games you can claim at the moment, each of them with said “claim” ending on August 2, 2021. There’s Automachef (from Team17 Digital Ltd), Tales of the Neon Sea (from Thermite Games), Batman – The Enemy Within (from Telltale), The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature (from Plug In Digital), RAD (from Bandai Namco), and Portal Dogs (from Brain Connected).

There’ll also likely be more titles turning over come August. The hero titles are, of course, the LucasArts games, each of which was either a monster hit when first released or became a slow burn monster over the past decades. Disney effectively shut down LucasArts back in 2013, but the legacy of the creators of the games the brand made live on. You’ll find LucasArts classic games on all platforms now, from mobile to PC to Xbox and back again – have a peek, and drop in an X-Wing vs TIE Fighter battle if you’ve not already done so.

Fortnite Bargain Bin discounts island goods in last week to spend bars

There’s only one week left in Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 6 — and as with the previous season, Epic has warned that you need to spend your gold bars because balances will be reset to zero starting with the next season. Here to encourage that spending and give players some exotics to finish their challenges is Fortnite Bargain Bin, a week of discounts that’ll be found at island vendors across the map.

Epic refers to this as an in-game clearance event, though keep in mind that it doesn’t apply to the Item Shop. Rather, Bargain Bin week brings bar discounts to the island vendors (bots) who offer weapon upgrades, Exotic weapons, and other things that give you an edge during gameplay.

With the vendors discounted, you can get these upgrades and Exotics at lower rates, helping you spend the bars and squeeze in a few more victory royales. Some examples of the discounts include the opportunity to get the Exotic Grappler Bow, Exotic Marksman Six Shooter, and Bushranger’s proper disguise service at half off the usual bar cost.

The gold bar discounts will be available through June 7, the last day of the current season. Epic plans to launch Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 7 on June 8, at which point your bar balance will be reset to zero and you’ll have to start collecting the gold again through gameplay and harvesting.

It’s unclear whether this season will bring a big event like past seasons, though that’s likely to be the case. Aliens have started abducting players on the battle royale island and an alien invasion is expected to be the big Season 7 theme, though Epic hasn’t provided any details yet.

Fortnite’s last big Season 6 update brings alien abductions to the island

If you’ve been playing Fortnite in recent days, you’ve likely noticed the increasing number of crude barriers appearing on the battle royale island’s big POIs. That’s because, it turns out, the current season’s big event will apparently involve an alien invasion. Among other things, it sure looks like players can soon expect to get abducted in the game.

Epic released its major 16.50 Fortnite update this week, the last major update we’ll see in the current Chapter 2 – Season 6. As expected, the initial changes following this update have been small, with the most notable being the return of dual pistols in the game. As well, Fortnite Creative now offers Extra Large Islands for creators.

In bigger news, however, it seems aliens are coming to the Fortnite island. There are the Foreshadowing Challenges that were added in the last big update, ones that we now know involve things like investigating a mysterious black helicopter that crashed to the island, using a CB radio, putting warning signs up at new crop circles, repairing telescopes, and destroying strange TVs.

As well, a leaked animation apparently shows what will happen when players are abducted by aliens in the game. Data-miners have leaked numerous details about this alien invasion, including that the UFOs will appear randomly above the island and abducted players will be moved somewhere else on the island with restored health and shields.

It’s unclear whether the alien invasion will itself be the big season finale or whether there’s something bigger coming after them. All signs point toward aliens and UFOs being the big theme for the game’s upcoming Chapter 2 – Season 7, which is scheduled to arrive in two weeks.

Fortnite 16.10 update will bring a new ‘apex predator’ to island

A new Fortnite update drops in the early morning hours tomorrow, bringing a number of changes including new items and adjustments to existing weapons. Though we don’t have all of the details yet, Epic has revealed several of the changes that will arrive with update 16.10, including the addition of a new ‘apex predator.’

Players have been anticipating the arrival of raptors in Fortnite since the current season’s release. The battle royale island features large eggs near dinosaur remains and players have assumed due, in part, to unlockable items featuring raptor skulls that live raptors will hatch from the eggs.

These eggs began showing cracks last week, indicating that they will hatch soon. Epic has somewhat confirmed that change will arrive with tomorrow’s update, teasing that a new apex predator is coming to the island.

This creature — which wasn’t named — will join the existing wolves and wild boars, as well as the prey animals like chickens and frogs. In addition to the new predators, the update will also bring some adjustments to the game’s loot and crafting, though we don’t yet know what kind of tweaks Epic has planned. Likewise, Creative Powerups support will expand.

As far as the battle royale changes go, the update will tweak the makeshift shotgun and primal shotgun; crafting material costs will scale based on rarity levels, and animal bones and mechanical parts will be available as floor loot.

Finally, Epic notes that today is your last chance to play the Zero Crisis Finale playlist before it is removed.

Epic hints at dinosaurs coming to the Fortnite battle royale island

If you’ve spent any amount of time playing the new Primal season of Fortnite, you’ve likely come across two oddities: the Cuddle Fish, which appear to do nothing, and ‘Raptor Eggs,’ which can be broken apart to reveal a bunch of goo instead. What is the point of these items? Epic has explained how to use Cuddle Fish, and has also dropped a hint about the Raptor Eggs.

The Raptor Eggs are those giant eggs found near what appear to be dinosaur bones located in various wilderness regions on the battle royale map. They don’t do anything right now — you can break them open with your pickaxe, but they just explode with goo and you don’t get any items.

These are more than just fun props, though, at least based on a recent hint from Epic. In a blog post detailing some things to know about the new season, including how to craft certain weapons and use wildlife, the company briefly addressed the eggs, stating only:

We’re not really sure we want to touch that one yet. You should stay away, too.

The wording strongly suggests that the eggs — which players are assuming are raptor eggs — will eventually hatch, unleashing dinosaurs onto the island. This wouldn’t be particularly surprising given that Fortnite season 6 includes wildlife; as well, one of the season’s images (above) shows a skin wearing what appears to be a raptor skull.

Meanwhile, what about those Cuddle Fish? They don’t appear to do anything when you throw them, but that’s the point. Epic explains that these fish can be tossed in places to use as ‘traps’ of sorts — they’ll engage and go after opponents who get too close to them.
