How to use anonymous questions on Instagram

You can do lots of fun things on Instagram to pass the time. One of those things is letting your IG followers send you anonymous questions and messages via an anonymous messaging app. It’s an interesting way to see how people feel about you (and other topics) when they don’t have to risk being embarrassed by their own opinions or questions.

One of the most popular ways to host anonymous questions on Instagram is via an app called NGL. In this guide, we’ll go over what NGL does and how to use it for anonymous questions on Instagram.

What is NGL?

NGL is an anonymous messaging app for Instagram that allows its users to request anonymous questions and messages from their followers. The name “NGL” means “not gonna lie” (a common phrase used on social media) and it refers to the fact that the app tries to encourage honesty via anonymity.

Here’s how the app works: You post an Instagram Story that contains an NGL messaging link. Your followers view the Story and use the link to submit a question or message anonymously to you. Once your followers submit their messages, NGL sends you a push notification to alert you. You can view the messages you’ve received in the NGL app. You can also reply to these messages, but it’s done publicly via another Instagram Story.

It’s not hard to imagine how anonymous messaging apps like NGL can go horribly wrong. People can abuse such apps to send bullying or abusive messages anonymously. However, NGL has said that their app uses “world class AI content moderation” to “filter out harmful language and bullying.” And it does offer a way to report any abusive messages that still make it to your NGL inbox.

In the following sections, we’ll show you how to use NGL for anonymous questions on Instagram and how to report abusive messages in NGL.

How to post anonymous questions on Instagram using the NGL app

If you want to receive anonymous messages on Instagram, you can do so with the NGL app. It’s a very popular option for handling anonymous questions on Instagram, and it’s easy to use. Here’s how to set up and use NGL:

Step 1: Download the NGL app. It’s available for both Android and iOS devices.

Once downloaded, open NGL on your device.

Step 2: Select the Get questions! button. Then, enter your Instagram handle when prompted. Select Done!


Step 3: NGL will automatically generate an anonymous messages link that features your Instagram handle. This is the link your followers will use to send you anonymous questions and messages. On the Play screen, select Copy link. Then select the Share! button.

Step 4: You’ll then be taken through a quick tutorial on how to add your messages link to your Instagram Story. Review the tutorial and keep selecting the Next step button until you see the Share on Instagram button. Select this button.

Step 5: You’ll then be taken to Instagram, where NGL has pre-made a Story for you that announces your request for anonymous messages. On this screen, select the Sticker icon in the top right. Then select the blue and white Link sticker.

Step 6: On the next screen, under URL, go ahead and paste the NGL messaging link you copied earlier. Then tap Done.

Select Your story to post your NGL link to your Story. Your followers will then view your Story and select its NGL link to send you an anonymous message.

How to respond to anonymous questions on Instagram using NGL

Once your followers start sending you anonymous questions and messages via your NGL link, NGL will start sending you push notifications alerting you to your messages. Tap on these notifications to open the NGL app so you can view your messages.

Here’s how to respond to your messages:

Step 1: In the NGL app, on the Inbox screen, if you have messages, you should see brightly colored envelope icons with hearts on them. Select one of these icons to view its message.

Step 2: On the message’s screen, you’ll see the anonymous message that was sent and two options: Who sent this and Reply.

If you want to see hints that will help you figure out who sent the message, select Who sent this. This is a premium feature that requires a weekly paid subscription of $5.99.

If you want to reply, which is free to do, select Reply.

Step 3: You’ll then be taken to Instagram, where NGL has already pre-made an Instagram Story that includes the question someone asked you.

In that Story, type in your response to the question. Select Your story to post your response to your Instagram Story so that everyone can see your answer.

How to report abusive messages on the NGL app

As you can imagine, anonymous messaging apps have the potential to be a breeding ground for abusive messages. And while NGL says they use AI content moderation to filter out such messages, you may still find yourself in a situation in which someone bullies you via your own NGL anonymous messaging link. If this happens, it’s important to know how to report harassment on NGL:

Open the offending message and select the Report icon in the top left of your screen. This icon looks like a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle. Then select Report.

According to NGL, doing so also means that the message will be deleted and that the sender will be blocked from messaging you again in the future.

Amazon’s Alexa will now guess what skills you want to use based on your questions

Finding new ways to use Amazon’s Alexa has always been a bit of a pain. Amazon boasts that its AI assistant has more than 100,000 skills, but most are garbage and the useful ones are far from easy to discover. Today, though, Amazon announced it’s launched a new way to surface skills: by guessing what users are after when they talk to Alexa about other tasks.

The company refers to this process as “[inferring] customers’ latent goals.” By this, it means working out any questions that are implied by other queries. Amazon gives the example of a customer asking “How long does it take to steep tea?” to which Alexa will answer “five minutes” before asking the follow-up: ”Would you like me to set a timer for five minutes?”

This all sounds well and good, but it’s not hard to imagine this feature (which is already available to Alexa customers in English in the United States) potentially becoming quite annoying. If Alexa infers a user’s intent incorrectly and suggests an unwanted skill, then that person is bound to feel irritated, as if they’re being advertised to by their digital butler.

Amazon gave The Verge a number of example scenarios of follow-up questions (below), and said that other skills that feed into the system include Bark Like a Dog, Earth Cam, Harry Potter Trivia, Historical Voices, Slow Speller, Xbox, and Zoo Keeper. Some of these scenarios will be useful for users, but others less so. It’s a bit of a mixed bag really.

Whether this new function will be useful or irritating will depend on its implementation, but it’s part of Amazon’s long-term goal to make talking to Alexa more natural. Earlier this year, the company announced new abilities for the AI assistant including the ability to ask clarifying questions, changing the tone of its voice, and a new “conversation” mode in which Alexa engages with multiple participants.

Language models struggle to answer questions without paraphrasing training data

The task of long-form question answering (LFQA) involves retrieving documents relevant to a given question and using them to generate a paragraph-length answer to that question. While many machine learning models have recently been proposed for LFQA, the work remains challenging, as a recent paper coauthored by University of Massachusetts Amherst and Google researchers demonstrates.

The researchers developed an LFQA system that achieves state-of-the-art performance on a popular dataset. But they found that even the best LFQA models, including theirs, don’t always answer in a way that’s grounded in — or demonstrates an understanding of — the documents they retrieve.

Large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-3 and Google’s GShard learn to write humanlike text by internalizing billions of examples from the public web. Drawing on sources like ebooks, Wikipedia, and social media platforms like Reddit, they make inferences to complete sentences and even whole paragraphs. But studies demonstrate the pitfall of this training approach. Open-domain question-answering models — models theoretically capable of responding to novel questions with novel answers — often simply memorize answers found in the data on which they’re trained, depending on the data set. Because of this, language models can also be prompted to show sensitive, private information when fed certain words and phrases.

In this most recent study, the coauthors evaluated their LFQA model on ELI5, a Python library that allows developers to visualize and debug machine learning models using a unified API. There was significant overlap between the data used to train and test the model; as high as 81% were given in paraphrased form. And the researchers say that this reveals issues with the model in addition to ELI5.

“[Our] in-depth analysis reveals [shortcomings] not only with our model, but also with the ELI5 dataset and evaluation metrics. We hope that the community works towards solving these issues so that we can climb the right hills and make meaningful progress,” they wrote in the paper.

Memorization isn’t the only challenge large language models struggle with. Recent research shows that even state-of-the-art models struggle to answer the bulk of math problems correctly. For example, a paper published by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley finds that large language models including OpenAI’s GPT-3 can only complete 2.9% to 6.9% of problems from a dataset of over 12,500. OpenAI itself notes that its flagship language model, GPT-3, places words like “naughty” or “sucked” near female pronouns and “Islam” near words like “terrorism.” A paper by Stanford University Ph.D. candidate and Gradio founder Abubakar Abid detailed the anti-Muslim tendencies of text generated by GPT-3. And the Middlebury Institute of International Studies’ Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism claims that GPT-3 could reliably generate “informational” and “influential” text that might “radicalize individuals into violent far-right extremist ideologies and behaviors.”

Among others, leading AI researcher Timnit Gebru has questioned the wisdom of building large language models, examining who benefits from them and who’s disadvantaged. A paper coauthored by Gebru earlier this year spotlights the impact of large language models’ carbon footprint on marginalized communities and such models’ tendency to perpetuate abusive language, hate speech, microaggressions, stereotypes, and other dehumanizing language aimed at specific groups of people.

10 burning Microsoft Surface Duo questions we need answered before it goes on sale

Look out Samsung Galaxy S11, iPhone 12, and Google Pixel 5: There’s a new kid in town—or at least there will be, by the time all of those phones launch in 2020. Microsoft on Wednesday gave us a sneak peek of the Surface Duo, its first smartphone since the ill-fated Windows Phone, and it’s definitely unique.

Something of a cross between a laptop and a Galaxy Fold, the Surface Duo is a device with more questions than answers. What we know for sure is that it runs Android and needs to be opened like a laptop to be used, but there are so many more things we need to know before it goes on sale late next year, like:

What’s the resolution of the Surface Duo displays?

The centerpiece of the Surface Duo is obviously the dual display. Microsoft revealed that the phone uses a pair of 5.6-inch screens. But that’s all we know about them. Are they 2K resolution like the Surface Pro X or Quad HD like the Galaxy Note 10+? Are they OLED or PixelSense IGZO screens? Are they 60Hz or 90Hz? Can you watch a movie full-screen and have it span across the hinge? Smartphone display tech has advanced in leaps and bounds since the days of the Windows Phone, so the Surface Duo needs to start with a killer screen.

Are those screens LCD or OLED?

What kind of processor will it use?

In its exclusive look at the Surface Duo, Wired noted that the unit it saw was powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor, the same found in today’s premium Android phones. That’s going to be outdated by next year, so clearly it’s just a stop-gap. But will it simply run the Snapdragon 865 (or whatever the latest chip Qualcomm releases is called)? Or will it follow the Surface Pro X and use a custom chip? Microsoft’s custom silicon would go a long way toward separating the Surface Duo from the pack, so the fact that Microsoft didn’t say either way during its reveal is intriguing.

How much storage and RAM is inside it?

Today’s phones can pack half a terabyte of storage and 12GB of RAM at the high end, and Microsoft clearly wants the Surface Duo to be a work-first device. A base model of 8GB RAM/128GB storage like the Surface Pro X seems likely, but we want to know what the maxed-out version is. We’ll take 16GB and at least 512GB, please.

Are you hiding a headphone jack, Surface Duo?

Will it have a headphone jack?

We haven’t gotten a full 360-degree look at the Surface Duo yet, but from the pictures we’ve seen, we’ve yet to spot a headphone jack anywhere on the device. That’s not surprising—the Surface Pro X doesn’t have one, and the wireless Surface Earbuds just landed—but we’d still like to know for sure.

What’s the quality of the camera?

According to the pics we’ve seen as well as Wired’s report, the Surface Duo doesn’t have a rear camera. Rather, the selfie camera and the main camera are one and the same. But we don’t know anything about it. Will the final shipping product stick with a single camera or upgrade to a dual or triple array? Will it provide Windows Hello facial recognition? Can you take slowfies like on the iPhone? Obviously a tablet-quality camera won’t cut it here, so we’re very interested to see what the Surface Duo delivers.

What kind of camera is that inside the top bezel?

Will it have 5G?

2020 is shaping up to be the year of 5G, with a new integrated Qualcomm modem, greater expansion of networks, and maybe even a 5G iPhone. So if the Surface Duo arrives without it, it could be a damper on an otherwise good phone.

Alexa’s latest upgrades help it listen to multiple people and ask clarifying questions

During Amazon’s event today, the company announced a range of improvements that are coming to Alexa. The company says the voice assistant will be better at responding to multiple people, and that in other cases, it will be smarter about asking and remembering the answers to clarifying questions. Alexa is also being updated to change its tone in response to a conversation.

These new capabilities were demonstrated across a series of demos. The first shows off how users are able to directly teach Alexa after it asks clarifying questions. In the presentation, Alexa was asked to “set the light to Rohit’s reading mode.” The voice assistant was able to understand that it didn’t know what this reading mode was meant to be and asked the clarifying question, “What do you mean by ‘Rohit’s reading mode’?” When the presenter, Rohit, told Alexa that his light should be set to a certain percentage while in reading mode, Alexa was able to store that information and remember it for next time.

Another upgrade focuses on making Alexa sound more natural by understanding the conversation’s context and adjusting its tone accordingly. Alexa might place more stress on certain words or take more pauses, Amazon says.

A final demonstration showed two people asking Alexa to join their conversation. After this, the voice assistant could understand when it was being directly addressed, versus when the two people were talking to each other. All of this happened without them having to use Alexa’s wake word in the middle of the conversation.

Amazon typically announces a number of upgrades for Alexa at its major hardware events, alongside smaller updates that appear throughout the year. Last year, the company announced a range of new features for its voice assistant, including a new more natural-sounding voice, a multilingual mode designed for bilingual households, and a “frustration detection” feature which lets Alexa apologize when it gets your requests wrong. Oh, and who could forget the special Samuel L. Jackson voice skill (which was then expanded this year)?

Over the course of 2020, Amazon also announced some more minor updates for Alexa. The voice assistant received a new longform speaking style designed for content like podcasts in April, and just this month Amazon announced Alexa for Residential, a new program to make it easier to integrate Alexa devices into rental properties.

Five burning Pixel 4 questions following Google’s official ‘leak’

Google might have pulled the greatest trick with the Pixel 4. On Wednesday afternoon, the Made by Google Twitter account confirmed a leak that was just starting to make the rounds: the Pixel 4 will finally have a second camera on the back, along with a new design that looks an awful lot like the presumed iPhone 11. And in doing so, it made the Pixel 4 a whole lot more interesting.

That’s because there’s a lot more to be excited about than a square camera bump and a new sensor. Google may have squashed a few months of rumors and leaks with the first Pixel 4 image, but it also completely changed my expectations for the upcoming handset. By revealing what should be one of the phone’s biggest features months ahead of the game, Google actually created more hype of the phone.

Here are four things I can’t wait to learn more about:

What does the front look like?

Now that we know what the back of the Pixel 4 looks like, the question remains: How big is the display on the front? Google has steadily increased the size of the Pixel and the Pixel XL over the three iterations, but with phones like the Galaxy S10 5G and OnePlus 7 Pro pushing the display size all the way to 6.7 inches, Google could go really big with the Pixel 4.

Will the Pixel 4 have a notch?

And then there’s those bezels. And the chin. And the notch. Let’s face it, the Pixel has never been a phone that people drool over, but recent renders have suggested that Google might be fixing the Pixel’s bland design with the Pixel 4. I mean, is it possible they showed us the back early because the front is so beautiful?

What will the new camera do?

OK, so the Pixel 4 will have a dual-camera array on the back. Big deal right? Basically every Android phone for the past two years has had at least two main cameras for ultra wide, telephoto, and/or depth shots, and the new hotness is triple and even quad cameras. So the mere inclusion of a second lens on the Pixel 4 isn’t a reason to get excited.

Dual cameras are nothing new on smartphones, but how will the Pixel 4 up the ante?

What’s more intriguing is what those cameras will be able to do. With just a single lens, Google has delivered some awesome features on its Pixel phones, including Top Shot, Night Sight, and portrait mode, so we can only imagine what it will be able to do with twice as many cameras. Google already delivered Group Selfie Cam with the dual front camera on the Pixel 3, but we’re hoping there’s a whole lot more packed into the Pixel 4.

Where’s the fingerprint sensor?

One thing missing from the Pixel 4 render Google tweeted out Wednesday was the fingerprint sensor. Normally holding court just below the camera, its conspicuous absence means one of two things: It’s moving under the display or into the front camera a la the LG G8’s time-of-flight sensor.

Xiaomi’s Air Charge tech looks magical — but I have a million questions

I wouldn’t be surprised if right now, in an office in China, a bunch of Xiaomi employees are jumping up and down and yelling, “Suck it Apple!” The company just revealed that it has invented a device that wirelessly charges your devices over the air.

What Xiaomi has claimed to achieve is long-distance wireless charging. The company claimed it could charge several devices at once at up to 5 watts (which isn’t much). It hasn’t specified the Mi Air Charger’s range, but it said that it can work across “several meters.”

Got a programming interview coming up? Preparing for it is as important as developing your coding knowledge to ace it. It’ll give you the confidence to handle the interview and shake off the jitters. This is especially true if you are facing a programming interview for the first time in your life.

To help Node.js developers achieve the necessary preparedness for an interview, I have put together a list of 15 commonly asked Node.js- and web development-related interview questions. These questions and their answers will also prompt you to brush up on any areas you feel need improvement before the big interview.

In this post, we are focusing on questions related to only Node.js; however, bear in mind that Javascript-related questions are very common in Node.js interviews, so you should prepare for some of those as well. Right now, let’s dive in to see the Node-related questions you are likely to field in your next interview.

How is Node.js different from Javascript?

When should you use Node.js?

Node.js is asynchronous, event-driven, non-blocking, and single-threaded. It makes Node a perfect candidate for developing the following types of applications:

  • Realtime applications like chat and services delivering live updates.
  • Streaming applications that deliver video or other multimedia content to a large audience.
  • I/O intensive applications, like collaborative platforms.
  • Web backends that follow microservices architecture.

However, Node.js’ unique qualities make it less than ideal for some other types of applications: those that carry out CPU-intensive tasks like complex mathematical computations will be restricted by Node’s single-threaded execution.

What does EventEmitter do?

Every object in Node.js capable of emitting events is a member of the EventEmitter class. The http module is one such example.

All EventEmitter classes can use the eventEmitter.on() function to attach event listeners to the event. Then, as soon as such an event is caught, its listeners are called one by one synchronously.

What is Node’s event loop?

Since Node.js is single-threaded, it has to be non-blocking to prevent the thread from spending too long on a task that takes a while to complete. The event loop is responsible for enabling this non-blocking behavior. Its job is to schedule pending tasks using the application thread.

We know that Node uses callbacks to handle the response returned by an asynchronous function when its task is complete. Similar to the event that created the task, the completion of the task also emits an event. Node.js adds these events that require handling to an event queue.

The event loop iterates over events in the event queue and schedules when to execute their associated callback functions.

What are Node Streams?

Streams are pipelines that read or write data from a source and transfer it to a continuous flow destination. There are four types of streams:

  • Readable
  • Writable
  • Duplex (both readable and writable)
  • Transform (A type of duplex stream. Its output is calculated using the input)

Each stream is also an EventEmitter. It means a stream object can emit events when there is no data on the stream, when data is available on the stream, or when data in the stream is flushed from the program.

What is the difference between readFile and createReadStream functions?

The readFile function reads the entire content of the file asynchronously and stores it in the memory before passing it to the user.

createReadStream uses a readable stream that would read the file chunk by chunk without storing the entirety of it into the memory.

createReadStream optimizes the file reading operation compared to readFile by using less memory and making it faster. If the file is of considerable size, the user doesn’t have to wait a long time until its entire content is available, because small chunks are sent to the user as they are read.

How do you handle uncaught exceptions in Node.js?

We can catch uncaught exceptions thrown in the application at its process level. We attach a listener to the process global object to catch such events.

Can Node take full advantage of a multi-processor system?

Node applications are always single-threaded. So, naturally, the application uses only a single processor even when running on multi-processor systems.

But one of Node’s core modules, Cluster, provides support for Node applications to take advantage of multiple cores. It allows us to create multiple worker processes that can run on several cores in parallel, and share a single port to listen to events.

Here, each process uses IPC to communicate with the main thread and pass the server handle to others as needed. The main process can either listen to the port itself and pass every new connection to child processes in a round robin order, or assign the port to child processes so the child processes listen to requests.

What is the reactor design pattern used in Node.js?

The reactor pattern is used for maintaining non-blocking I/O operations in Node.js. It attaches a callback function (a handler) to each I/O operation. The handler is then submitted to a demultiplexer at the time of request creation.

Demultiplexer collects every I/O request made in the application and queues them as events in a queue. This is what we call the event queue. After queuing the event, the demultiplexer returns the control of the application thread.

Meanwhile, the event loop iterates over each event in the event queue, and invokes the attached callback to handle the event response.

This is the reactor pattern used by Node.js.

What are the benefits of a single-threaded web backend to a multi-threaded one?

Put another way: though Node is single-threaded, most of the programming languages used for backend development provides multiple threads to handle application operations. In what way is having only a single thread is beneficial to backend development?

  • It’s easier for developers to implement applications. Our applications have no risk of running into unexpected race conditions suddenly while in production.
  • Single-threaded applications are easily scalable.
  • They can serve a large number of user requests received at a moment without much delay. In comparison, a multi-threaded backend has to wait for a thread from the thread pool to be free to serve the user request when traffic is high. With Node’s non-blocking nature, there’s no risk of a user request hanging on to the single thread for too long (this is true only when the operations are not CPU-intensive).

What is REPL in Node?

REPL stands for Read-Eval-Print-Loop. It is a virtual environment where you can run a programming language easily. Node comes with a built-in REPL to run JavaScript code. It is similar to the consoles we use in browsers to run JavaScript code.

To start the Node REPL, you just have to run the command, node, on the command-line. Then, once you write a line of JavaScript code, you can subsequently see its output.

The callback passed to the setImmediate function is executed in the next iteration of the event loop over the event queue.

On the other hand, the callback passed to the process.nextTick is executed before the next iteration of the event loop, and after the operation currently running in the program is finished. At the application start, its callback is called before the event loop starts iterating over the event queue.

Therefore, the process.nextTick callback is always called before the setImmediate callback.

What are stubs?

Stubs are used when testing applications. They simulate the behavior of a given component or a module so that you can focus on just the part of the code you want to test. By using stubs in place of components irrelevant to the test, you won’t have to worry about external components impacting the results.

For example, if the component you are testing has a file reading operation before the part you expect to test, you can use a stub to simulate that behavior and return mock content without actually reading the file.

In Node, we use libraries like Sinon for this purpose.

Why is it a good practice to separate ‘app’ and ‘server’ in Express?

By separating app and server in Express, we can separate the API implementation from the network-related configuration. This allows us to carry out API tests without performing network calls. This also guarantees faster test execution and better code coverage metrics.

To achieve this separation, you should declare API and server in separate files. Here we use two files: app.js and server.js.

What are yarn and npm? Why would you want to use yarn over npm?

npm is the default package manager distributed with Node.js. It has a large library of public and private packages stored in a database called ’emp registry’ that users can access via npm’s command-line client. With the help of npm, users can easily manage dependencies used in a project.

yarn is also a package manager that was released as an answer to some of npm’s shortcomings. However, yarn relies on the npm registry to provide users access to packages. Since yarn’s underlying structure is based on npm itself, your project structure and workflow doesn’t have to go through major changes if you are migrating to yarn from npm.

Like I mentioned before, yarn provides better functionality over npm in some cases. Unlike npm, it caches every package you download, so you don’t have to redownload it whenever needed.

It also provides better security by verifying the integrity of packages using checksums. It guarantees a package that worked on a certain system will work exactly the same way in any other system.
