PS Plus Extra and Premium games for July include ‘Stray’ and ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade’

Sony has announced the first new batch of games for its higher PlayStation Plus tiers since it revamped the service. Along with the three titles that are available for PS Plus Essential members and those in the current Extra and Premium libraries, subscribers will have access to a bunch more games as of July 19th.

One of those is Stray, a cyberpunk adventure game in which you play as a cat with a drone companion. It’s the first time that a third-party title will be available on a higher PS Plus tier on its release date. You’ll have access to the PS4 and PS5 versions. 

Members will also be able to check out PS5 blockbuster Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. The PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake was previously available to claim through PS Plus. However, for a while, those who snagged it were unable to get Intergrade without paying for the full game. Square Enix eventually relented and offered an upgrade path.

Also on July 19th, Extra and Premium members can play Marvel’s Avengers on PS4 and PS5 at no extra cost. Things haven’t exactly gone incredibly well for that but the gameplay is solid. Crystal Dynamics just added the latest playable character, The Mighty Thor (Jane Foster), a few weeks ago.

On top of those, you’ll have access to a bunch more Assassin’s Creed games, Saints Row entries and some other games:

Premium members will be able to dive into a couple more PlayStation Portable titles in the form of No Heroes Allowed! and LocoRoco Midnight Carnival as well. That’s a fairly solid slate of additions overall, with something for just about everyone.

Sony says it will continue to shakeup the PS Plus lineups on a monthly basis. It will refresh the Essential library at the start of each month and add new games to Extra and Essential a couple of weeks later. Bear in mind that games will cycle in and out of the Extra and Essential tiers, but you’ll have access to Essential titles you claim as long as you maintain a PS Plus subscription.

Final Fantasy VII Remake’s second chapter is called ‘Rebirth’

During a Final Fantasy VII 25th anniversary celebration, alongside announcements of a Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core remake and news that Remake Intergrade will launch on Steam later this month, we got our first tiny glimpse of the next part of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

It’ll be called Rebirth, and seems to focus on some of the major plotlines of the original (we won’t get spoilery) all while throwing a wrench into our expectations.

We see protagonist Cloud and antagonist Sephiroth marching around a later area of the original game with lush vegetation, while fellow party member Aerith (we think) muses off-screen on whether she’s died. Or not. 

We also get a brief glimpse of Cloud resting on the shoulder of Zack – the hero of Crisis Core. So, er, yeah. Even if you’re totally up to speed with FFVII lore and spin-offs, this trailer is a giant question mark to get fans talking and theorizing for the next twelve months and beyond.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase said during the stream that: “Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second installments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters.”

The game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, said: “The Final Fantasy 7 remake project will be a three-part trilogy, but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is much more than just one installment in the series.”

There you have it. Final Fantasy VII Remake will be a trilogy. And so very many spin-off games on the side.

Everything We Know About Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2

To many fans, Final Fantasy VII Remake is the ultimate showcase of nostalgia. The remake retells the story of Cloud, Aerith, Barret, and Tifa while featuring enhanced visuals, new mechanics, and a more modern feel, breathing new life into the beloved RPG. The odd thing about this 2020 remake is that it only covers a small portion of the original game. Final Fantasy VII Remake lasts around 40 hours and takes place during the Midgar section, which is — comparatively speaking — a minor section from the PlayStation classic.

Because of this, developer Square Enix intends to release multiple parts to wrap up the entire story — culminating in a large, overarching saga. While most of the plans for this full project probably haven’t been ironed out just yet, we do know we’ll be getting a follow-up, colloquially referred to as Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 (though it’s uncertain if that will end up being its official name). It’s not entirely clear how much of this original game this new installment will cover or whether additional installments will release after it.

Despite this, there’s still a lot we know about the forthcoming installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga. Here’s everything we know about Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2.

Currently, there’s no word on when we’ll get to play Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2. The first part of the remake saga was infamous for its long development cycle, so fans were worried the next installment would be in the same boat. While it’s likely Part 2 will have a much shorter development cycle than the first one, you shouldn’t expect to play it until at least 2022. Up until this point, Square Enix hasn’t given us an official look at the upcoming sequel, so it’s likely still a ways off.

The bright side is that Square Enix already has a lot of the groundwork laid out, thanks to the first part, so it shouldn’t take as long as some would expect. Development on the second part had already begun in 2019, and although it was in pre-production then, two years is plenty of time to make significant progress. Considering Square Enix already has an idea for what the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga should look like, many are hoping for the company to be able to crank out each installment much faster.

According to a Famitsu interview (as relayed by ComicBook) with the game’s producer Yoshinori Kitase last year, development on Part 2 is well underway. “Development for [Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2] is progressing smoothly. However, please wait a bit longer for more details.”

“My aspirations, not just in 2021 but beyond, will be how the story will broaden from here on out. It’s so exciting that I can’t even imagine what it will be like.”


Final Fantasy VII Remake and its Intergrade enhanced edition are both exclusive to PlayStation systems currently. The verbiage leading up to the game’s initial launch is that it would be a timed exclusive, though it’s not quite clear which additional platforms the first remake will come to. With that in mind, the same logic can be applied to Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2.

It’ll be available for PlayStation and possibly other platforms later down the line. Fans are hoping it’ll be available on PC and Xbox consoles, but given the saga’s history thus far, it’s tough to say if this will come to be. The original 1997 Final Fantasy VII was always associated with PlayStation, and it seems Square Enix is sticking close to that idea with the remakes.

There isn’t a trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 at this time. In attempts to not repeat the same mistakes from the first part’s marketing cycle, Square Enix is likely waiting until Part 2 is further along to show it off for the first time. As you might recall, the first installment of the remake saga was shown in 2015 but underwent many developmental changes after its reveal.

In fact, it was originally supposed to be created by CyberConnect2 before Square Enix brought it in-house. All of that is to say that we’ll likely see a trailer for Part 2 much closer to release, possibly next year sometime. Some speculate a trailer for it could be shown at The Game Awards 2021, though it’s tough to say for certain.

The gameplay introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake was substantially different from the original. It removed the strictly turn-based combat in favor of a real-time action/menu-based system that felt modern while calling back to its roots.

During a CEDEC interview with producer Yoshinori Kitase and co-director Naoki Hamaguchi (as translated by Twitter user @aitaikimochi), Square hinted at possible changes to the combat in Part 2. “A word that pops into mind is ‘action battle,’” Hamaguchi said. “They experienced a new type of action battle system, and they want to contribute to the system too,” he added, in reference to the fans who played the first remake installment.

When asked about the new staff working on Part 2, Hamaguchi said, “They definitely contribute different ideas that will hopefully allow us to create new surprises to the battle system as well!”

With Part 2 taking place after Midgar, the game will open up a lot more, so you should expect a less linear design than in the first remake. Based on what Square Enix has said, it seems like Part 2 will almost feel like an open-world game. “The next installment will involve Cloud and company to leave Midgar and explore the world map,” Hamaguchi told IGN. “Our next challenge will be to create gameplay that leverages the vastness of the world, unlike what we did in this current title.”

Part 2 will also carry over some of the new elements introduced in the remake’s Intermission DLC. During an interview with The Washington Post, Hamaguchi referenced one of these features. “Additionally, with Intermission, there’s another element introduced: Combo movies where Yuffie and Sonon team up … which makes for a different feel in battle strategy. I would like to leverage these, including other elements we tried out in Intermission, in our next story.”

The first remake took many liberties and featured lots of changes from the 1997 original. Players should expect lots of changes with Part 2, too, not just in the gameplay but narratively as well. “Although those who played the original game know the story, they’re probably thinking what will happen now?” Kitase said during the CEDEC interview. “We want to create something that can surprise them and that they can enjoy that lives up to their expectations. We did something similar in part 1.”

Beyond a handful of interviews here and there, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is a mysterious game that has far more questions attached to it than answers. How will the progression from the first part work? Will your characters’ levels reset in Part 2? What will be the pricing model for each subsequent part? How many parts will there be? When will they all launch? Will the story of the entire saga mostly stick to that of the original?

However Part 2 turns out, it’s shaping up to be a fitting continuation that borrows elements from the first installment while implementing new ideas. It seems Square Enix wants to keep the same general themes and story beats from the original 1997 release, but with many differences and improvements to allow it to stand on its own in a modern sense.


The original Final Fantasy VII from 1997 was a strictly single-player experience, as was the first remake from 2020, so it’s highly unlikely the next installment will have any multiplayer modes. Square Enix has said Part 2 will differ from the original, but we doubt it’ll go as far as having a multiplayer component. For a Final Fantasy multiplayer experience, Final Fantasy XIV is the go-to option right now.

The Final Fantasy games do have a history of including DLC, especially with recent entries. The most relevant example is the Yuffie DLC that was added to Final Fantasy VII Remake alongside the Intergrade version of the game. But aside from large story additions like that, the game has also received a fair share of cosmetic and gameplay items as downloadable content. With that in mind, it’s highly likely Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 will include DLC of some kind — it’s just too early to know for sure at this point.

It may come with some nifty pre-order bonuses that grant in-game items or something similar. While it’s still too early to know, it’s a safe bet the next installment will feature DLC. Perhaps it will lead into the third installment like the Yuffie DLC did to bridge the gap from part 1 to part 2.


Again, since we haven’t even gotten an official reveal trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, it isn’t available to pre-order just yet. Once the game has its first major showing, it’s possible it’ll be available to pre-order depending on the route Square Enix is taking with the marketing. We’ll update this post when pre-orders go live.

Final Fantasy VII Intergrade’s entertaining DLC should also be on PS4

Soon into the first chapter, Yuffie is joined by a new character, Sonon. He acts as a close-range tank, distracting enemies from Yuffie who’s more easily damaged. While he’s an uncontrollable support character, and will choose his own movement and enemies to attack, you can still order him to attack with skills or equipped magic from the battle menu.

This leaves Yuffie able to deal damage safely from a distance; she has the ability to mete out elemental attacks without having to equip the necessary materia (orbs that add magic and skills to characters), able to attack weak points without tinkering much with your loadout. You can also bolster Sonan with materia, making him a more tempting lure to enemies, or just amping up his hit points to ensure he survives more often than not. Sonon also has a convenient resurrection skill that triggers if Yuffie gets KOed, ensuring you’ll center your fight strategies around letting Sonon draw the enemy’s attacks, while Yuffie attacks weaknesses and shoots across the area for enemy crowd control.

I’m impressed Square Enix was able to eke out yet another completely different fighting style for this DLC chapter — and this bodes well for the subsequent four characters that were party members in the PSOne’s Final Fantasy 7. In the original, barring stats and limit break attacks, characters were blank slates which you loaded out with materia to offer more attack options. In the Remake, they move and attack almost completely differently, demanding different playstyles when you switch.

There’s a PS5 version of Remake, too. Given that FF7R was a recent exclusive to the PS4, the changes aren’t groundbreaking but they’re certainly noticeable. I took issue with the grainy land and skyscapes you’d see from the detailed areas in FF7R, and in Intergrade, the resolution has been increased and detail improved. Things that the internet went to town on, like those atrociously rendered doors, have been fixed.

In Intergrade, you can now switch between performance (60fps fixed) and graphics (4K, more graphical flourishes) modes. The former is a revelation during your battles across both the game and the Intermission chapters, as your team fluidly moves around enemies. It feels easier on the eyes and just more satisfying to play. The original Remake (I hate having to write that) didn’t choke too often, but sometimes all the pyrotechnics and detailed boss battles did take its toll on framerates on the fourth-generation PlayStation. There’s also a new photo mode in Intergrade, making it easier to captures some beautiful stills from what is a gorgeous game. I’ve added my favorite shots at the bottom.

There are some other PS5 upgrades, too. Yes, the DualSense’ haptic feedback occasionally kicks in but you’ll rarely notice it. I was only reminded of the difference during the motorcycle chase during the base game, where you can literally feel the texture of parts of your tarmac. Besides that and Cloud’s occasional memory flashes, no other times really stood out where the controller was offering me any extra immersive rumbles. As you might also expect, the loading speeds are also hugely improved: loading your saved game, or hopping between chapters are both incredibly swift.

One of the big criticisms leveled at Intermission is that these new chapters are playable only on the PlayStation 5 — if you’ve been able to buy one. But do the environments, battles and rambunctious ninjas demand next-gen console hardware?

Only Square Enix knows for certain, but I don’t think so. The PS4 would have struggled to keep up with Yuffie’s battle style, which sees her shooting across the battlefield after her oversized shuriken. There are other parts, as you navigate levels, that seem to be there expressly to showcase how smoothly the PS5 can handle a ninja hurtling down a mechanized fire pole, with scaffolding, levels and items shooting past — all backed by a five-track jazz arrangement. I’m not joking.

Right at the start of the Intermission chapters, Yuffie gingerly steps through a gap — one of the in-game slow-downs familiar to anyone that’s played Remake on the PS4. This seems to happen only once in the new parts of Midgar introduced in Intermission. It’s almost a knowing nod that things are going to speed up. And they do: the second chapter takes a few darker turns, and at times turns into a gauntlet of punishing battles that are both challenging and entertaining. Complete the Intermission chapters, and a secret optional battle in the core game, too. I won’t spoil it for you.

For those that haven’t played FF7R yet, Intergrade is the definitive version, and the DLC is worth a playthrough, but it’s a shame that the Intermission chapters aren’t playable on the PS4. It turns what is a very polished piece of DLC into a slightly hollow cash grab.

New Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade trailer shows PS5 upgrade in action

As announced earlier this year, Final Fantasy VII Remake is getting an upgrade on PlayStation 5. That PS5 upgrade is called Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, and as one would imagine, it’ll take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s more powerful hardware to improve visuals and loading times. Today, Square Enix debuted the final trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, giving us a look at the PlayStation 5 upgrades in action.

The new trailer was published at 60 frames per second in 1080p, so it should give us a good idea of how the game will perform on PlayStation 5. Much of the trailer is actually centered around the DLC that’s launching alongside the PlayStation 5 upgrade, which is called FF7R Episode Intermission.

As previously revealed, the new DLC focuses on Yuffie and her partner Sonon as they go toe-to-toe with antagonists named Scarlet and Nero. Scarlet is Shinra’s director of advanced weapons who’s equipped with an impressive looking suit of battle armor, while Nero is “a member of the elite unit within Deepground known as the Tsviets.” The DLC will also introduce a new Summon Materia called Ramuh, along with a new tactical mini-game called Fort Condor.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be available to most people who own Final Fantasy VII Remake on PlayStation 4. Those who own a digital copy of Final Fantasy VII Remake can upgrade to a digital version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade regardless of the type of PlayStation 5 they own, while those who have a disc-based version can only upgrade if they have the standard PS5 with a disc drive. Final Fantasy VII Remake copies obtained from PlayStation Plus can’t be upgraded to Intergrade.

FF7R Episode Intermission, on the other hand, will be available separately, so those hoping to catch Yuffie’s side story will have to pay for it. Square Enix hasn’t revealed how much FF7R Episode Intermission will cost, but it does say that it will be live on the PlayStation Store on June 10th – the same day that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade goes live.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade trailer compares PS4, PS5 visuals

After almost decades of waiting, fans of Final Fantasy were finally given the 3D remake they’ve been clamoring for. That said, it is being delivered piecemeal and the next serving is still nowhere in sight. In the meantime, Square Enix and Sony are milking the title while it’s still fresh and giving it a special spin exclusive to the PlayStation 5. Almost a month after its initial announcement, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is getting another trailer, one that pits the PS5 version against the PS4.

It’s already a given that the PS5 version will have upgraded visuals compared to one running on aging PS4 hardware. It’s another thing to see the differences side-by-side, however, and the new trailer shows off the new lighting, texture, and fog effects that the latest-gen console enables. There are also some new modes that will let gamers pick whether to prioritize graphics or performance.

In addition to plain visual upgrades, FFVII Remake Intergrade also adds new capabilities, like faster load times thanks to better hardware. The PS5 version will also get a “Normal (Classic)” difficulty that brings it closer to the original game’s feel. Finally, the trailer also shows off the new Photo Mode that lets you capture certain moments from a different angle, literally.

Last but definitely not least, the new Yuffie chapter is being shown off in all its upgraded glory. The ironically merry ninja is perhaps one of the biggest reasons fans will want the PS5 version even if they don’t really care much for the visual upgrades.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is coming June 10 and is a free upgrade for those who already own the PS4 version of the game. That said, Yuffie will be costing you as it needs to be separately purchased for those going this route.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade won’t take full advantage of PS5 – but there’s good news

The PlayStation 5 is an impressive console, and a lot of that impressiveness stems from the machine’s DualSense controller. With haptic feedback, 3D audio, and adaptive triggers, the DualSense controller definitely feels like a step up from previous generations, and PS5 games that support all of those features certainly have the potential to be more immersive as a result. Unfortunately, when Final Fantasy VII Remake gets a PS5 upgrade later this year, it isn’t going to support all of the PS5’s big features.

That’s according to Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura in an interview with Famitsu (as reported by VGC). He talked a bit about what gamers can expect from the Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 upgrade – dubbed Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. While we can expect a better looking game across the board, Nomura says that the lighting and textures are where we’ll notice the biggest difference.

He also says that players will notice more environmental effects as they explore the in-game, which should “enhance the sense of realism and immersion.” The only example he gave for new environmental effects was fog, so it’s unknown what others will be present in the game.

Regarding PS5-specific enhancements, Nomura said DualSense’s adaptive triggers “are partially supported” in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. “However, in terms of using all of the features of PlayStation 5, please wait for the next game where we can start from scratch,” Nomura said. So, PS5 owners will have to wait until the next installment to use the DualSense controller’s full capabilities.

Beyond giving us some souped up graphics, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will feature a new episode that stars Yuffie and will add a photo mode to the game. That’ll be out on June 10th, while we currently don’t have a release timeline for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2. We’ll let you know when that changes, so stay tuned.

Final Fantasy VII Remake leads a huge March for PlayStation Plus

Yesterday, Sony revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be getting an upgrade on PS5 later this year. That comes as little surprise – Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of the biggest PS4 games in 2020, and considering that the remake isn’t even complete yet, we’ll certainly see its follow up on the PlayStation 5. Following yesterday’s announcement is the reveal that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be the headliner game in what appears to be a very strong March for PlayStation Plus.

Sony revealed a batch of four games that will be available through PlayStation Plus next month. In addition to Final Fantasy VII Remake, PS4 users will also be getting Remnant: From the Ashes, a survival shooter that up to three players can work their way through cooperatively. PS5 users, meanwhile, we will be getting a puzzle game called Maquette, so Sony is sticking to this trend of offering a PlayStation 5 game along with the other titles each month.

PlayStation VR owners are even getting a new game next month, with Farpoint going free through PlayStation Plus. It’s rare to see Sony offer four games through PlayStation Plus, and that number goes to five when you remember that Destruction AllStars on PlayStation 5 is going to remain free through PlayStation Plus for the month of April.

Unfortunately, there’s a big caveat to keep in mind with Final Fantasy VII Remake. While the game is free to keep for as long as you remain subscribed to PlayStation Plus, like all other PS Plus games are, you won’t be able to upgrade the PlayStation 5 version of the game when that upgrade comes down the pipeline this summer. If you plan on taking advantage of that upgrade, you’ll need to purchase the PS5 version separately.

Considering that the PlayStation 5 is a hard product to find at the moment, that might not matter to a lot of people, but it’s something to keep in mind if you envision a PlayStation 5 in your future. In any case, all of these games will be going live on PlayStation Plus at the beginning of March and will be available through April 5th.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PS5 revealed: All the details

As part of its State of Play broadcast today, Sony has revealed gameplay footage from Final Fantasy VII: Remake Intergrade, contrasting the updated PS5 graphics with the version of Remake players get on the PlayStation 4. The graphics update includes a noticeable boost in the game’s lighting, as well as quality of life improvements and more.

Final Fantasy fans have been anticipating the remake for PlayStation 5 for a while now — it is scheduled to hit shelves on June 10, 2021, bringing a ‘visually enhanced’ experience with a better-than-ever look at the classic title. As expected, Sony included a preview of the upgraded graphics in its State of Play broadcast today.

Fans can expect Final Fantasy VII: Remake Intergrade to include an all-new episode that tasks players with infiltrating Shinra Corporation as Yuffie Kisaragi. The new content will be joined by the quality-of-life enhancements that take advantage of the upgraded hardware, including support for 4K/60fps gameplay, faster loading speeds, and the addition of a new photo mode.

If you’re a former PS4 owner who had purchased Final Fantasy VII: Remake for the older console, you’ll be able to download the Intergrade version for free on your PlayStation 5. However, the new episode featuring Yuffie will cost extra.

Final Fantasy VII mobile games give a taste of the Remake

Final Fantasy VII, abbreviated to FF7 or FFVII at times, is perhaps one of the most iconic games in a franchise that spans decades and generations of consoles. After decades of waiting, fans are getting their dreamed remake but, almost cruelly, they still have to wait again for the subsequent parts of the saga. In the meantime, however, Square Enix wants to distract fans with mobile spin-offs, including one that could perhaps be considered “spoilery” for the entire game.

Final Fantasy VII is actually already available on mobile but it’s a straight out port of the original PlayStation version of the game. Given how large the Remake is, mobile gamers probably won’t ever see that one ported to smartphones but they will at least be able to get an appetizer of some of the lore surrounding it. Even better, the two FF7 mobile games announced caters to two types of gamers.

On the one hand, you have FINAL FANTASY VII THE FIRST SOLDIER (yes, in all caps) which is a battle royale dressed up as a Final Fantasy VII game. You put on the boots of a SOLDIER candidate, at least before Shinra tainted their name, and get to dish out some guns and materia like, well, a SOLDIER in training.

Perhaps more interesting is the chapter-structured single-player game FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS (also all caps) that supposedly covers the entire FF7 timeline. That means events from Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, and even Dirge of Cerberus. There will also be entirely new content created by REMAKE writer Kazushige Nojima that goes back in time to the founding of SOLDIER.

Aside from these brief descriptions, however, details on these upcoming mobile games are pretty scarce. FINAL FANTASY VII THE FIRST SOLDIER will arrive later this year while those looking forward to FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS will have to wait until some time in 2022. Both will be available for free on Android and iOS with your usual serving of in-app purchases.
