Discord’s overhauled Android app will shorten the wait for new features

Discord has begun rolling out an overhauled Android app that addresses one of the most consistent complaints with the software. If you follow the company, you’ve probably seen it often announce new features only to note they will launch on iOS and desktop first before arriving on Google’s operating system. We saw that recently with the release of . According to Discord, that’s about to become a thing of the past.

In a published on Monday, the company said it recently rebuilt its Android app using React Native. Discord has employed the framework for iOS development ever since Meta first open sourced React in 2015. Now that both of Discord’s mobile apps are on the same underlying codebase, the company notes Android users can expect feature consistency.

Comparison screenshot showing Discord's new Android interface. The new UI more broadly aligns with its iOS counterpart thanks to Discord's move to React Native.

Discord

Additionally, the company says Discord users will see a more consistent user experience across platforms. As one example, the Android app will feature a larger default font that is more in line with the iOS version of the software. Discord also anticipates it will release future updates faster.

“As Discord continues to grow across platforms, we want to find ways to support you and your communities as quickly and efficiently as possible, regardless of which device or platform you happen to be using,” the company said. “Utilizing React Native across every mobile platform Discord is on is just one of the tools that helps us support what you do, and we can’t wait to show you how.”

If you already have Discord installed on your Android phone, the company says you can expect the overhauled app to arrive on your device in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, new Android users can download the software from the Google Play Store.

The 4th of July sales are coming up fast, and they seem mighty tempting if you’re looking to buy yourself a new laptop. However, we’ve got news for you — the 4th of July sales aren’t the best time to buy devices like laptops. Instead, it’s Prime Day deals that are the most appealing option here. To help you figure out what to buy and when, read on while we take you through what you need to know.

4th of July sales you can shop today

  • : Amazon hasn’t kicked off an official 4th of July sale since Prime Day is right around the corner, but it has discounted a number of must-have electronics and appliances (even more than usual) among its early Prime Day deals.
  • : Best Buy’s 4th of July Appliance Sale is now underway, bringing steep discounts on home essentials such as dishwashers, refrigerators, and washer-dryers. You can also get a free $100 gift card with appliance package purchases of $1,499 or more.

  • : Looking to eat better? Right now, you can sign up for HelloFresh and get your first meal delivery box for as little as $3.79 per meal kit, along with free home shipping.
  • : HP has been running 4th of July sales since what feels like the start of time, and it’s back with another one for 4th of July 2022: Enjoy up to 60% off a wide selection of laptops, desktops, monitors, PC peripherals, and printers.
  • : Lenovo is another PC brand that loves running these seasonal sales, and its 4th of July deals include doorbuster discounts of up to 60% on ThinkPads, Legion gaming laptops, monitors, accessories, and more.
  • : Lowe’s is offering between $150 to $750 off home appliances, patio furniture, and just about everything else you’d squeeze into or outside your home, including outdoor grills. The more you buy, the more you save.
  • : Nectar is running one of the best 4th of July sales on bedding, with $100 discounts on its memory foam mattresses along with up to $499 in free extras (sheets, pillows, etc.) included with every mattress purchase.
  • : Samsung makes everything from smartphones to home appliances, so whatever you’re after, this 4th of July sale probably has it. Everything from Galaxy phones and smartwatches to 4K TVs and refrigerators are marked down right now.
  • : Target’s 4th of July sale features discounts of up to 50% on clothing, toys, appliances, tech, indoor and outdoor furniture, and more.
  • : You can save big on thousands of items including home appliances like dishwashers and refrigerators, patio furniture and accessories, and household tools at The Home Depot.
  • : Save up to $500 on select mattresses, up to 40% on any size topper, and as much as $100 on pillows and bedding during Tempur-Pedic’s 4th of July sale.
  • : Like Target, Walmart is another go-to place if selection is what you desire. Its 4th of July Rollback event is offering up juicy savings on clothing, toys, video games, electronics, home essentials, outdoor goods, and just about everything else.
  • : Looking for some new outdoor furniture? Hammock? Jacuzzi? Gazebo? Lighting? Heater? Umbrella? Grill? Wayfair’s 4th of July sale has it all — for as much as 60% off.

4th of July sales are best for appliances

The 4th of July sales are very strong at one particular thing — appliance deals. When it comes to buying new appliances for your home like a new refrigerator, oven, washer/dryer, or pretty much any other kind of large white goods, the 4th of July sales are the time to look.

That’s because, traditionally, 4th of July sales tend to focus on ways in which you can improve your home. Besides large appliances, that also tends to mean that items like mattresses and bedding, as well as furniture, tend to be heavily discounted during the 4th of July sales, unlike Prime Day deals.

Alongside ways to improve your home, 4th of July sales also often see discounts on clothes and shoes, too. That way, everything about your aesthetic can be improved for less from your home to your own personal style.

Prime Day brings some of the best laptop deals of the year

So, when should you buy a new laptop? It has to be Prime Day. Prime Day happens July 12 and July 13 so it’s just a week after the 4th of July and could mean a far more considerable saving than buying early. The Prime Day laptop deals are often some of the best around and we don’t just mean during the summer — we mean all year round. The only time that such deals tend to be rivaled is during Black Friday and Cyber Monday with both of those events not happening until late November, following Thanksgiving.

That’s a long time to wait for a new laptop so buying as part of the Prime Day deals is a much better option. We’re counting on seeing some pretty impressive laptop deals around the Prime Day sales. We’re not just talking about when buying from Amazon either. Often, other retailers also get in on the act and launch their own sales which can be just as competitive as Amazon and sometimes even better. That’s why it’s important to look around.

Besides regular laptop deals, it’s also highly likely that we will see some Prime Day MacBook deals. Granted, such deals don’t tend to be quite as competitive as other laptop deals since MacBooks are so highly sought after that they command higher prices. However, you’re still likely to enjoy some reasonable discounts on them so if you’re in the market for a new MacBook, it’s worth keeping an eye on what Prime Day can bring.

Don’t wait to install the June Windows update — it fixes the Follina security flaw

Microsoft has patched a Windows vulnerability that hackers are actively exploiting. If you own a system that uses Windows 7 and up, you’ll want to update your computer as soon as possible (via Bleeping Computer).

The security flaw, called Follina (CVE-2022-30190) by researchers, lets bad actors hijack users’ computers through programs like Microsoft Word. Security researchers have been aware of the threat since late May, but Microsoft reportedly dismissed their initial findings.

In an attack documented by security company Proofpoint, hackers associated with the Chinese government sent malicious Word documents to Tibetan recipients. When opened, these documents use the Follina exploit to take control of the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) to execute commands that could be used to install programs, create new user accounts, and access, delete, or change data stored on a computer. The exploit has also been used in phishing campaigns targeting American and European government agencies.

Microsoft’s original warning about the threat offered workarounds to protect against the threat, but this update (KB5014699 for Windows 10 and KB5014697 for Windows 11) should eliminate the need for that. “Microsoft strongly recommends that customers install the updates to be fully protected from the vulnerability,” Microsoft says. “Customers whose systems are configured to receive automatic updates do not need to take any further action.”

M2 MacBook Air vs. M1 MacBook Air: Should you wait to buy?

While Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is normally used to announce updates for software products, Apple also announced a new MacBook Air and the M2 chip inside of it at its 2022 event.

Usually, it’s easy to recommend the new model over the old one. But in this case, the M2 MacBook Air feels more like a completely new model rather than a replacement of the old one. And since Apple continues to sell the original M1 MacBook Air, the answer to the question of which you should buy isn’t so simple.

Design

Right off the bat, the M2 MacBook Air drops the iconic wedge shape that made the Air famous. Instead, the M2 version adopts the same squared-off sides and rounded edges as its bigger brothers, the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch. While it does lose a bit of flair (and extreme thinness), it does make the MacBook line more consistent.

The new M2 MacBook Air chassis also continues to live up to its namesake by being only 2.7 pounds and 0.44 inches thin. It’s perfect for those who prize portability over raw power (though it has plenty of that as we’ll see later). It should be noted: The M2 MacBook Air is just 0.1 pounds lighter than the M1 MacBook Air.

The keyboard on the M2 MacBook Air isn’t that different from the M1 version, but does look more in line with the larger MacBook Pro models. This includes the Touch ID button being slightly different than the M1’s, as well as the full-size function keys along the top.

While the stereo speakers on the M1 MacBook Air flank either side of the keyboard, the M2 MacBook Air places its four-speaker setup in-between the keyboard and the hinge. This new speaker setup also includes support for Spatial Audio, both through Dolby Atmos in the built-in speakers and through dynamic head tracking using the high-end Apple AirPods products.

Display

The M2 MacBook Air sitting on a desk.

The display has been widened ever so slightly from 13.3-inches on the M1 Air to 13.6-inches on the M2 Air. That change is because of the reduced bezel size, both along the side edges and the top. That means, yes, the new MacBook Air includes a notch, which the old one does not. The screen also has rounded edges along the top corners.

Tucked into the notch is an improved 1080p webcam, bumped up from the 720p option on the M1 MacBook Air. You might be enticed to use Apple’s new Continuity Camera with the M1 MacBook Air, which converts your iPhone into a webcam. On the M2 MacBook Air, that probably won’t be necessary.

The panel itself has also been upgraded to a 2560 x 1660 Liquid Retina display, which Apple says is the biggest and brightest ever on a MacBook Air. Liquid Retina is certainly a bump up from the M1 MacBook Air, but don’t expect the same eye-popping look of the Super Retina XDR, which is the mini-LED panel saved for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch).

This display does support up to a billion colors and has an increased brightness to 500 nits. That’s compared to the 400 nits possible with the M1 MacBook Air. Both displays have True Tone technology.

Ports

The M2 MacBook Air sitting on a desk.

When it comes to ports, both the the M1 and M2 MacBook Air have the same arrangement: Two Thunderbolt 3 ports that support USB 4 and USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds. Both devices are capable of supporting just one external display, however.

There’s also a combo headphone mic jack on the M2 MacBook Air that Apple says supports high-impedance headphones, which the M1 MacBook Air does not.

The one major difference is the inclusion of the MagSafe 3 magnetic charging port on the M2 version. For some, that itself is enough to justify buying a new MacBook Air. The main benefit is that it frees up one of the two USB-C ports for other purposes rather than charging. Don’t worry, though, you can still charge the laptop using the Thunderbolt ports.

Both laptops also support the same Wi-Fi 6 wireless standard, as well as Bluetooth 5.0.

Performance and battery life

Other than the display and overall design, the M2 chip inside of the newest MacBook Air is what separates it from its predecessor.

Like the M1 version, the M2 MacBook Air is fanless, owing to the power efficiency of the M2 chip. Apple says the M2 chip is up to 1.4 times faster than the previous M1 model while still getting up to 18 hours of battery life.

Apple M2 features overview.

While a 1.4x increase in power is measurable, it’s not that much. In fact, the M2 seems to be more of a refinement of the M1 rather than a true generational leap. Still, the M2 MacBook Air benefits from being manufactured on a “second-generation 5nm” process node.

This means an overall 18% faster CPU, 35% faster GPU, and 50% more memory bandwidth as compared to the M1, now up to 100GB per second.

Importantly, the M2 MacBook Air has the same media engine used in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which the M1 MacBook Air lacks. The media engine supports hardware-accelerated ProRes encoding and decoding.

We’ll have to test all of this ourselves before we can make a judgment call on just how much more performant the M2 is, but suffice it to say, you’ll get improved performance out of the M2.

The M2 MacBook Air allows you to configure your laptop with an extra 8GB of RAM for a total of 24GB, whereas the M1 MacBook Air is stuck at a maximum of 16GB. Storage options, though, are the same — both starting at 8GB and maxing out at 2TB.

Buy now or wait?

That leads into pricing and whether it’s a good time to buy one.

The base M2 model starts at $1,200 and sports an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 8GB of unified RAM. That’s $200 more than the base M1 model with a 7-core GPU.

The M1 MacBook Air was already a capable machine for everyday computing, productivity, and even video editing. Those who already have an M1 Air probably don’t need to upgrade unless you really want the MagSafe connector.

However, those still holding on to an Intel-based MacBook Air may want to consider upgrading as Apple touts a 15x increase in power over the older Intel models.

Those who don’t already own a MacBook and are interested in buying one should probably just get the M2 model over the M1 if you can swing the extra $200. You’ll have more options when it comes to CPU/GPU/memory and benefit from performance increases.

That said, the M1 MacBook Air is still plenty fast for most people and that says a lot about Apple’s engineering prowess.

Retailers are rolling out some of the best Black Friday deals we’ve seen, and included among them are deals on the must-have Nintendo Switch gaming console. But with so many early Black Friday sales hitting the shelves, and with a high likelihood of last year’s supply chain issues affecting this year’s Black Friday deals, there are plenty of reasons to believe you’re best off grabbing a new Nintendo Switch sooner than later.

The Nintendo Switch has been hard for people to get their hands on throughout 2021, as it’s one of the most popular gaming consoles around. We’ve seen plenty of retailers run completely out of Nintendo Switch inventory throughout the year, and with the plethora of Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals we’re already seeing, current inventory is only going to shrink in the weeks leading up to Black Friday. It’s entirely possible we’ll see the Nintendo Switch hit backorder before Black Friday reaches us.

The Nintendo Switch makes for an amazing holiday gift, which makes the supply chain issues that are likely to have an effect on the best Black Friday deals an even bigger consideration. There’s little point in saving money on a Black Friday deal if your new Nintendo Switch isn’t able to reach you in time to slide it under the tree. Manufacturing and shipping issues make receiving your Nintendo Switch on time a real concern, no matter how great of a Black Friday deal you may be waiting for.

While you are likely to see the best Black Friday deals on Black Friday itself, the early Black Friday sales going on now make us feel like grabbing a new Nintendo Switch at a current discount is your best bet at guaranteeing yourself one. The unpredictability of inventory and shipping times makes missing out on a new Nintendo Switch way too easy, so grab some already great Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals while they’re here and waiting for you.

The best time to grab a deal is when it’s offered, even if the chance for a slightly better one may be out there in the future. Below you can browse through some other amazing Nintendo deals to go alongside your new Nintendo Switch.

Don’t Wait Until Black Friday to Buy an Xbox Series S

Digital Trends may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.

Looking for the ultimate holiday gift for gamers? Check out the best Black Friday deals for the Xbox Series S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and more. Snagging a deal on a new gaming console before Black Friday actually happens is a smart idea.

This holiday season, we’re expecting supply chain issues that could cause shortages of some of the most popular items forecasted to be gift-giving hits, including the Xbox Series S. We recommend doing your holiday shopping as early as possible to make sure you don’t miss out and can get one before they’re sold out, as they might not come back into stock for several months. Not sure which console is right for you? Check out this article outlining the PS5 vs. Xbox Series S to compare the two.

Since it was first released late last year, the Xbox Series S has been hard to get ahold of. The console was met with plenty of enthusiasm among gamers, but limited supplies have made it difficult to regularly find one. While it looks like major retailers, including Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart, are regularly getting resupplies of the console, there’s no telling how long they will last, especially with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and holiday sales kicking off early this year.

If you really want an Xbox Series S, don’t wait until Black Friday to buy it, especially if you’re planning to gift this console to your partner or child. New gaming consoles are already hard to come by, and there’s not much point in potentially saving a few extra dollars during Black Friday if the console isn’t under the tree on Christmas morning, especially if supply chain issues materialize as predicted.

Don’t Wait Until Black Friday to Buy a Gaming Laptop — Shop NOW

Digital Trends may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.

This year’s Black Friday deals have arrived, which means that gamers are preparing their wallets to spend on upgrades and new additions to their arsenal. If you’re one of them, you shouldn’t be settling for Black Friday laptop deals — aim for Black Friday gaming laptop deals, so that you’ll purchase a machine that can keep up with the rigorous requirements of modern video games. You shouldn’t wait until Black Friday to start shopping though, as there are many early Black Friday deals that are already available.

Last year’s Black Friday was plagued with supply chain issues, and we expect the same problems to resurface in this year’s edition of the shopping holiday. If you wait until Black Friday to purchase a new gaming laptop, especially if you’re planning to buy a popular model like the ones in Digital Trends’ best gaming laptops, there’s a high chance that you won’t get it in time for the holidays. This is a shame if you’re planning to give it as a gift to a loved one, or even to yourself. To avoid this, you should buy a gaming laptop now from one of the early Black Friday deals that retailers have already rolled out.

There’s also the possibility that the gaming laptop that you prefer will go on backorder before Black Friday, at which point you won’t even be sure if you’ll get it within the year. Products from popular manufacturers, such as Dell and its Alienware brand, Razer, and Asus, usually sell out within Black Friday — sometimes within the first few hours of the shopping holiday. To secure stocks of the gaming laptop that you prefer, you should purchase the model that you want as soon as possible.

The discounts on gaming laptops may increase as Black Friday nears, but compared to the early Black Friday deals that are currently available, the extra savings will only be for a few dollars. There’s no sense in waiting for lower prices when there’s a higher chance that stocks of the gaming laptop that you want will run out. If you see an offer that you like from the early Black Friday gaming laptop deals, don’t hesitate. Finalize your purchase right away, or else you might regret it.

PUBG 14.2 brings explosives, but console players will have to wait

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds update 14.2 was detailed on Friday, giving those who aren’t on the test servers their first look at what they can expect next month. The patch will bring a few big changes to the game, particularly for players who prefer the new Taego map, including explosive weapons for attacking enemies from a distance.

The PUBG 14.2 patch arrived on the game’s PC test servers last week and is scheduled for release to all players on PC and consoles next month. PC players who aren’t on the test servers will get access to the 14.2 update on November 3, followed around a week later for consoles on November 11.

Players can expect a new mortar weapon in Taego that will spawn in buildings, enabling players to fire rounds a distance of 121m to 700m. All of the maps will get the new M79 Smoke Grenade item, meanwhile, enabling them to take cover in open areas by deploying a cloud of smoke. Even better, the M79 will only take up the Pistol slot in one’s inventory.

Another key change with this update involves the swimming mechanic. Going forward, players who are knocked while in water aren’t guaranteed death; rather, they’ll be able to enter a swimming mode for a chance at getting to shore for revival. The knocked swimming rate is set at half speed and the change doesn’t have any impact on drowning — it’ll only take 10 seconds for the player to drown and be eliminated.

On a more amusing note, PUBG is also getting a new Chicken character in 14.2. The animal will be found in the Taego environment, where it’ll be calm by default, though things like gunshots, footsteps, punching and other sounds may cause it to fly away in fear. Hitting the chicken will kill it.

Players who want to dig into the smaller details can check out the full 14.2 patch notes on the PUBG website now.

Don’t Wait Until Black Friday to Buy a Dell XPS 13 Laptop

Digital Trends may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.

Every year, Black Friday deals offer a great opportunity to upgrade your laptop while enjoying significant savings along the way. There’s never a shortage of Black Friday laptop deals, but while the sheer number of options is overwhelming, the Dell XPS 13 is always among the most popular choices. But if you’re planning to buy the Dell XPS 13 on Black Friday, it might be a better idea to purchase the laptop now from the early Black Friday deals that are already available.

The Dell XPS 13 is at the top of our list of the best laptops because of its streamlined design and solid performance. There might not be enough of the machine for everybody, though, as the supply chain issues that affected last year’s Black Friday are expected to happen again this year. With the popularity of the Dell XPS 13, its stock will likely run out, so there’s a chance that if you wait purchase the laptop on Black Friday, you won’t get it in time for the holidays.

If you’re planning to give the Dell XPS 13 as a gift to a loved one or to yourself this holiday season, purchase it now to make sure it arrives in time.

Dell laptops usually sell out on Black Friday, and with the Dell XPS 13 among its most in-demand models, it’s almost sure that it will go on backorder, possibly even before Black Friday starts. Dell and other retailers will be trying their best to provide ample supply, but if you want to be sure to get the Dell XPS 13 without having to wait for restocks, you need to buy it now from the early Black Friday deals that are available.

The discounts for the Dell XPS 13 may grow bigger as Black Friday approaches, but so does the chance that other shoppers will snap up all the stock. Besides, if the laptop’s price does go lower, it won’t be by much, so there’s no sense in waiting for a few extra dollars of savings when the machine’s stock could run out. If you see a Dell XPS 13 deal now that you like, don’t hesitate to make the purchase.

PUBG: New State release date revealed: The wait is almost over

Krafton, the company you may still know as Bluehole, has finally revealed the release date for its upcoming mobile twist on the popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The company first announced PUBG: New State in February alongside preregistration for the game, noting at the time only that it would arrive later on in 2021.

As first revealed back in February with the game’s initial announcement, PUBG: New State isn’t here to replace PUBG: Mobile. The new title will join the existing mobile game as a new option for Android and iOS users, bringing with it new content, graphics, and other key changes, the most notable being an entirely new environment.

PUBG: New State will be set in a futuristic world packed with new weapons and vehicles unlike those found in the existing PUBG titles. Krafton held a media showcase about the upcoming mobile game last week in South Korea, showing off gameplay footage and, among other things, finally announcing a release date: November 11.

That date will mark the global launch for PUBG: New State, which will be available to download and play in 200 countries. Krafton and PUBG: Corp will have a final playtest ahead of launch on October 29 and 30 that will be limited to 28 countries. Fans of the game or the battle royale genre in general can still preregister for the title on Google Play and pre-order on Apple’s App Store.

The November 11 launch will mark the arrival of another high-quality mobile game that fully leverages the latest and greatest mobile hardware while offering an experience that, says Krafton, may prove to be unlike anything you’ve played on your phone before.

PUBG: New State‘s minimum requirements are low enough that many mobile gamers should be able to enjoy the title, though players who have higher-end hardware will enjoy the best quality. Krafton says the use of “global illumination technology” will enable the game to offer a level of quality beyond “what was previously possible in mobile gaming graphics.”
